Be Nice to Me! ...

I gave blood today!

Well, not that it is anything new...
I turned 17 in September and have now donated Whole Blood twice and Platelets three times (where you have the needle in you for an hour and a half...)

Amazing. Really a good thing to do. I'm still 15, and I've got a rare neurological disorder (which is not at all serious) and I don't know whether they'd want me to. They'd probably have no problem with it. I'm just REALLY scared of a needle (I guess my parents don't need to worry about me doing heroin ). I get blood tests alot. . .

Any neurologists who are interested (and because I like to show off that I know what it is) the name of the disorder is paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis coreoathitosis (my spelling's off). It causes really small seizure-like things.

P.S. Was anyone being mean to you??

Why would anyone be mean to me? That only happens when they are writing 10 pages of notes by hand while I pull out my stowaway/deluxe combo and get it done in under 2 minutes...

As a physician who spends his days 1) trying to convince people to donate blood and 2) trying to convince other physicians not to transfuse so much blood let me say: THANK YOU FOR DONATING!!!

Let me quote some facts for everyone:
- Of all of the people eligible to donate blood in the US, only 5% do so
- 22% of the population will require a blood transfusion at some point in their life
- The demand for blood is increasing by about 9% per year
- The number of donations are decreasing by about 5% per year
- In the near future, demand will exceed supply and there will be some people who will not receive the blood they need

As a long time donor (blood, platelets, plasma) and Red Cross CPR/First-Aid instructor- thank you and congratulations!

Hmmm. Maybe we can get a challenge/contest out of this! How about it, VC staff- any chance we can rig up something for first-time donors or something?

(Only about 1/2 joking!)

I promise to give blood if they promise not to use a needle, bullet, or anything else involving pain...

I am a multi-gallon donor (yes, I put my money where my mouth is with regard to people donating). It really is not that bad, honest!!! If my wife, who has a major phobia about needles and a low pain threshold, can become a regular blood donor, anyone can!

Just keep thinking about the free cookies!

And the doughnuts, the cranberry/orange/apple juice, granola bars, etc.

Seriously, the only pain involved is when the needle is first inserted - you can't feel it after about 3 seconds.

***

Now, I am just bragging: Besides being a blood/platelets donor, I am also a volunteer with the Red Cross, putting in over 400 hours in three years. I have done everything from Disaster work (1999 N. Omaha Flood, local 9/11), hospital work, youth work, office work, blood drive work (canteen, registration...). I was the local chapter Teen Volunteer of the Year in 1999, and in 2000, I was nominated for a United Way volunteer award.

I have donated a few gallons myself so far. I also work in a lab, but not the blood bank, and know how important it is. I am very hard to stick and sometimes get stuck a couple times before they strike gold. I figure I can tolerate the discomfort for a few moments for the good it will do in the long run.

I salute you terrysalmi! I hope to see you back here repeating this post in 8 weeks....

pathdoc: a belated Happy National Medical Laboratory Week to you!

EVERYONE (I repeat) EVERYONE should donate as often as they can. I, too, have a fear of needles, but I have donated blood every two to three months for the last 32 years. I don't know how much that adds up to but it sure am a lot.

I can't look at the needle either before or after it is in my arm, but as someone who has known people saved by transfusions, I will continue to give until there's nothing left.

Damn! I'd forgotten all about it. I used to rather regularly, but had let it slip my mind. Any web resources as to when they'll be by my area?

The closest blood center to you, assuming your location is correct is:

Aberdeen
United Blood Services
1400 15th Avenue NW
Aberdeen, SD 57402
605-225-7732

United Blood Services, as far as I can tell, does not have a website for their local centers that list their mobile blood drives. I am afraid you will have to call them. If you are ever traveling east through Rochester, Minnesota stop by and I will be glad to collect your blood. We have really good cookies!

Resources for finding the blood center nearest you include the webpage for America's Blood Centers and the webpage for the American Red Cross.

There is so little pain involved that it is not worth worrying about, and you get a mild buzz afterwards from being slightly oxygen deprived and doing something good.

I have been with a lot of people who thought they could not 'do it', but most of them do, and the ones who do usually feel great about it!

In fact, I had donated at a Bloodmobile at my High School, and the comments BEFORE donating were "it hurts too much, the needle is so big, etc..." and AFTER donating "that was easy, I like the free doughnuts, I got out of class!"

You know if over 100 high school students can do it for the first time, anyone can!

(BTW: I was the first person through the drive that day, and it was sad because the nurses recognized me since I had given platelets just three days earlier, I knew the coordinator and was talking to her before donating since I am such a big volunteer, and I went through the process quickly and easily, while everyone else was obviously nervous - I think it made some of the ''popular'' kids determined to do it as calmly as ''the geek'' did)
