Try this:
In your Network panel (in Prefs app), set the phone number for your ISP to 00 (two zeros).
In the Details section, make sure Connection type is PPP, Idle timeout is Power off (not sure if that's important), Query DNS is checked, and IP Address Automatic is checked.
Now, go into Script and make a script that says:
Send ATDT5555555 (but instead of 5s use the phone number of your ISP)
Send CR:
Delay: 8
End:
Then try connecting. That works for me (Deluxe, Nokia 8290, T-Mobile, Earthlink). The two zeros for the phone number and the script to actually dial up were the missing bits of sorcery I needed.
(I use ComLink, which does pretty much the same thing as IrLink and is freeware. Its biggest problem is that it has to be manually disabled before HotSyncing.)
