Hi there,

Does anybody know if handspring has plans to start selling in Australia and New Zealand?

I am one of the few people out here with a visor, but the palm market seems to be good here...

I just wish I could buy springboard modules over here...

I'll be in Australia in May. What Springboards do you want? (And, where the heck is Rock Hampton? That's where they're sending me) Where are you in Sidney (Oh, good one... as if I'd understand when you tell me!)

check out http:\\whereis.com.au you can look up there what you need..

I am thinking of the Eyemodule2 but with the low aussie $ it is getting a bit expensive...

I'm on the north shore (the good part of town )
Maybe we can hook up and if you can bring your springboards I can have an idea how they look IRL...

So where was this announcement made? And why wont the link work?

I have to see how bad these prices truly are.

The 2mb Visor sounds like its about $AUD60 overpriced, but I guess thats not so bad really. According to that thinking, my Visor should actually be worth more now than when I originally bought it

Exclamation

Ok the link is up now,
http://www.mobilesolutions.com.au/handspring/

Mmm it is true, my visor deluxe one year ago cost me $AUD400, today it sells for $AUD519 !!!

But some of the prices are terrible How US $15.95 turns into $AUD49 for the Stylus 5-pack I will never know. No way am I paying $10 per stylus.

The flash module has gone from $US79.95 to $AUD249 thats (40% overpriced, maybe 30% when you take off the gst).

$AUD400 for the eyemodule 1. These prices are just crazy, doesnt look like I will be buying anything new

US visor Prism US$ 449 vs aussi visor Prism A$ 1049

according to this currency converter US$ 449 = A$ 881.613 that is a 167.387 A$ difference... that's alot... (even if you would add 10% for GST it would still add up to A$ 969.774 I guess the A$80 diffence is for transport and profit for local dealers...

Also I could only find the eymodule1 and not the eyemodule2.. why?

I lived in Brisbane 9 years ago... do they still have the import taxes? That might be one reason... I know that there used to be a pretty large tax.

At those price hikes... it would probably be worth it to fly to Singapore, buy what you wanted (get the RAM upgraded while there...), check out the city for a day, and get back for work on Monday. Could be a nice (expensive) weekend... but it might save a bunch of cash in the mean time... depending on what you wanted to buy ofcourse. Just a thought, probably not a helpful one.

I will be in Brisbane (visiting my brother) in mid May or so. If you were desperate for something, I could be a delivery person for you... if you wanted.

The issue of Handspring representation down under makes me want to cry. First of all I don't understand why it took them so long to start distributing in Australia. Sure it's a minor market compared to the U.S. BUT Australians (me being one of them) are very good when it comes to adopting new technologies. Australia has one of the world's highest number of mobile phones per capita. You'd think that this would be a perfect place to sell things like Visor Phone.

The extremely greedy prices are a whole other story. I simply refuse to pay those sorts of margins. Thanks, but we're not idiots.

Some people mentioned transportation costs as a possible reason for higher prices. I don't believe that argument is valid. I mean, Visors are made in Asia. If anything it should be cheaper to transport them to Australia.

I better finish this post before I explode from frustration. The more I write the more I am upset!!!! My anger is reduced only by the fact that I am currently living in Portland, OR where I don't have to worry about these things. But I will move back so they better do something about this! Sydney living is way to good to give up, even for a Visor freak like myself .

Arrow Middle Man

I think the price is high because of the middlemen. They have to get a nice cut to make it worthwhile for them.

Generally speaking though, American goods thend to be more expensive in Europe and Australia than the U.S. A pair of Levi Jeans for example is almost twice what it is in the U.S.

That's probably the reason, but another thing is that they might be testing the market down there. The extra cost might be due to the fact they they didn't get a big contract, but only a small one, which would cost more /visor. Maybe once they gain some market share down there the cost will go down as more visor's are sent down there.

Unhappy no modules available yet...

I went to Hardley Normal eehh, Harvey Norman (electronics shop over here) yesterday and saw they carry all the model visors, but no modules yet..
The salesguy seemed to know next to nothing about them either...

Also the prism was A$250 more than the Palm 3C... marketing wise that seems to much (IMHO off course)
Would you be willing to pay the extra 250$ for more colors? thats how most buyers will probably see it...

I guess we have to wait and see..
