I knew it was coming. When I read the terms & conditions for the Edge discount, it said

quote:
This offer may not be combined with any other Handspring offer except for the Edge/VisorPhone special offer running on Handspring.com concurrently with this offer.

I wonder why they aren't announcing these all at once, but rather every couple of hours? Seems they would either space them out by days or do it at once... What's the strategy here?

Anyway, I'd be mad except that there's still no CDMA available for retail

otherwise, GOOD DEAL!!

Translation: the Edge's and phones probably aren't selling that well, and they have stock to move!

Right, do you think the spacing is aimed at reducing panic? Why not space it out more? Seems like HS may be shortsighted & making knee-jerk reactions to the market?

I knew there'd be a price war, but I didn't think it would hit the high end stuff so hard!

Does that mean that you can't do the 25% rebate and the trade-up discount together?

*shrug* You could also consider it listening to the consumer base that's been whining about them being overpriced. I actually feel a bit vindicated in predicting the VisorPhone being discounted to $100 or less before Christmas.

I'll admit to being very surprised they went that low. I bet sales were pretty bad at that high level...

I'm not. It's the nature of the cellular beast. Early adopters will pay high rates for cool phones, but after 6 months to a year, you have to drop rates or you'll never expand adoption (which I'm sure has been sketchy anyway due to the deployment of GSM in this country).

<<brief (hopefully) off topic>>

Why do you suppose they went GSM, anyway?

Data capability and a nod to more global aspirations. I'm sure it was simpler for them to roll out a different band GSM phone for Europe et al than to make a CDMA version then try to reengineer a GSM version for them.

Right. Good point.

Toby, I gotta say, you know your stuff.

<<back on topic>>

I wonder if this new, reduced price will stick in some fashion? I also wonder if this reduced price will apply to future versions of the phone (CDMA, analog dual-band, etc)

I did a huge survey (that got me $15) for Handspring about the Visorphone, and they were really big on the price. And for me, I said that I wouldn't buy it until it was less than $150, so maybe we're weeing the results of me and other's responces to that survey. Ever since I got those questoins, I always knew that HS would lower the price.. just when?

Sure! Here you go....

25% discount on Edge
By the way, this link answers my original question. According to this articcle, the two offers can overlap!

i wish they'd smarten up and get this thing in canada already. though i could buy it and activate a service plan here on my own, i'd have to pay the us$249, which is quite a rip off in my opinion. $100 i would gladly pay.

mc.

Well, I do have a vested interest in paying attention to this stuff. The company I work for also owns a cellular company.

One can only hope. It would be a borderline traitorous move, but a CDMA version at the same price would compel me to jump to Sprint.

the $100 off promo and the $99 visorphone may be used together.

it says so specifically on HS website.
translation... $400 buys an edge with a visorphone

oh so tempting... well if I had $400

is the US visorphone easily adaptable to germany?

I'm going to be in germany next year, and well it would be idiotic to buy a visorphone unless it was usefuly in germany

What would be really great is if they'd let me buy one edge for $299 and 2 $99 visorphones, that way i could give my fiancee the old visor and a visorphone to go with it.

oh well if I had $500.. oh well

Kg

I can relate, I'm in a similar boat.
Maybe go auction, then repurchase the Prism & Visorphone. What terrible timing!
