Where'd they go?

I have actually read this board for a couple years but since I had Palm's and not Handspring products I never posted. This has always been a great source for PalmOS information though. I started out 3 years ago trying to decide between the Visor Deluxe and the IIIxe. Because of the deal I found at the time I got a IIIxe. When the Edge came out I wanted one really bad but again I found a great deal on a Vx. When it came time to go color I was all ready to get a Prism but talk of Handspring possibly discontinuing the Visor line kept me from buying the Prism and I ended up going with the M505. I have always envied the amount of expansion possibities the Visor owner had. I'm sorry that Handspring has dropped the Springboard as well as the Visor line. Where have all the great posters of this board gone? Are you all Clie owners now?
Just wanted to say that the Handspring community was always the most intelligent and best read of any boards I had gone.

Its been well over a year since we have seen either killer hardware or (more suprisingly) software. Frankly, I haven't added a new piece of gee whiz software to my VPL in a really long time...

I still own and use my Edge daily. The real issue is that there's nothing new on the Visor side coming out of Handspring. Many of the typical user issues have probably already been asked and answered, so there's really not a lot new to talk about. Almost all of the on-topic traffic is probably on the Treo boards, since they're where Handspring is devoting their energy.

Yep, I watch the Treo boards as well as VC and most of the traffic is there (as well as all of the posters we have grown to know and love). The Treo boards are also educational, even if you do not have a Treo, so you might want to check those out as well.

Left Palm (after 6 years) for Pocket PC and haven't regretted it for one minute.

Really? I left Palm for PocketPC for 6 months and regretted every minute of it. Happily back with Palm now.

Hmmmm - musta purchased a Casio. The Toshibas are selling like hotcakes - and for good reason too. I got:

- 32 MB, e570 (smaller than my Prism) ($220)
- Color screen ($0)
- Microsoft office compatibility/synchronization ($0)
- Bluetooth wireless CF card (talks to my phone and computer) ($100)
- MP3 player ($0)
- 802.11b wireless CF card (wireless web access work and home) ($90)
- External Keyboard ($45)
- 128 MB SD card ($45)
- 256 mb CF card ($39)
- Leather Case ($34)

all for $573. Plus I "reset" this beauty every couple of weeks - unlike my multiple daily resets with the Prism.

I avoided Windows CE like the plague until Handspring's abandonment/Palm's disconnection from their user base drove me to take a look around. In the intervening years of Palm dominance, Microsoft started to figure out what the customer wanted. As much as I hated to admit it - PocketPC has pulled up along side Palm OS for functionality, and has considerably more growth potential than even Palm OS 5.

What a shame for the Palm community that they couldn't hold off the lying, cheating, mediocre monster that is Microsoft, even when starting out from a near monopoly in the handheld market. Talking about resting on one's laurels.

As a matter of fact it was a Casio. Is there that much difference in the OS between devices? The Casio Hardware was nice although big, which wasn't my main issue with it. The OS was what I could not stand. Had to reset it several times a day, didn't care much for the forced upon programs that were in the ROM. QuickOffice is much nicer to me then Pocket Word and Excel. To make a quick memo was just more time consuming.

>>- 32 MB, e570 (smaller than my Prism) ($220)

Pocket PC needs more memory as there programs take up much more space then the Palms, 64MB probably would be better for Pocket PC.

>>- Color screen ($0)

Had the nicest screen of all (inside) with the Casio
Now use a M505 and have no problem with it's (dim) screen.
It was much complained about, but inside and durring the day I don't even have to use the backlight. Any kind of darkness and it's plenty bright. Battery life is amazing, I can use it for my normal uses and only have it drop 5% in a days time. The Casio I was lucky if I could make it a whole work day without recharging.

- Microsoft office compatibility/synchronization ($0)

As I said earlier, QuickOffice to me is much nicer. How many times did I accidently delete something from the Casio and then realize that it deleted it from my desktop as well when I synced up. Lost a whole contacts list in my Outlook this way. Sync my Palm to Palm Desktop, no chance of losing my Outlook.

- Bluetooth wireless CF card (talks to my phone and computer) ($100)

Avaible for Palm (as a SD Card) But I don't need this feature.

- MP3 player ($0)

Battery Drainer! Used the Casio's maybe 2 times in 6 months.
Don't forget to add the cost of additional memory cards to keep these MP3's on. Maybe 6 to 8 MP3's on a 32mb card.

- 802.11b wireless CF card (wireless web access work and home) ($90)

There are options for Palm here as well, again something I personally don't have a need for. If I want to surf the web I'll get on my Computer. My work provides a Pocket PC (HP Jordana 540) for me for this purpose. It sits in the cradle for weeks at a time as I use my M505 for all but the wireless option which isn't really that helpfull for me at my work place.

- External Keyboard ($45)

Again plenty of choice (probably more) avaible for Palm.

- 128 MB SD card ($45)

Not sure where you found a 128MB SD card for $45, Good job though.

- 256 mb CF card ($39)

MMC/SD works just fine for me.

- Leather Case ($34)- 32 MB, e570 (smaller than my Prism)
($220)

Just bought a RinoSkin Aluminum Hardcase for my M505 ($24)
Fits in my back pocket just like a hard wallet.
