3 options

I did the shortcut dot dot 7 and I get three choices for batteries.

1 NiCad
2 Rechargeable Alkaline
3 Alkaline

I use the Rayovac Rechargeable Alkalines and get about three weeks from them

As I understand it, this is a factor of the Palm OS version. Plat and Prism have OS 3.5, so they get the setting specifically for NiMH; other Visors have 3.1, so they have to make due with NiCad for NiMH.

(I agree with Potter -- rather hilarious that you can switch the battery gauge on the Prism. Kids -- don't try this at all!)

I don't have any problem doing the <shortcut-.7> method, but if you're really having trouble, use hackmaster and batteryhack. That's what I use to change my battery type as well as see the percentage (or voltage) remaining. Both my VDX and my girlfriend's use the Full Charge. I use Batteryhack, but she doesn't, so I used the .7 shortcut to change the battery type--no problems there.

I get about 2 weeks use (AvantGo, games, Mapopolis, Datebook, Memo mostly) before I recharge at around 30% battery charge. I'll typically charge it every week or so to avoid problems. My girlfriend doesn't use hers much, so she gets over a month between charges.

To the original post, while it's likely that your Visor is misinterpreting the voltage of the NiMH cells, it's possible that the cells are defective or you have a set that has a low capacity (though you would still get more than a day of use!). Overcharging them will also shorten the useful capacity of the cells. Unless your charger uses a processor to control the current that charges the cells, you could cook the batteries by leaving them on the charger.
