Question

I have the Visor Deluxe that I am using with 650mah NiMH batteries (NexCell).

With newly charged batteries, my battery indicator on the Visor doesn't show as full. With alkalines it did.

I know there are some differences in the voltage between the 2 battery types that might account for the lower showing.

I see that there is a command in OS3.3 which the visor doesn't have to set the battery type to NiMH. My question is what would that do? Is the battery indicator not correct on the visor when using NiMH batteries? Even though it doesn't show a full charge at the start, should the batteries last as long as the alkalines?

Would a 3rd party battery app give me a more accurate reading? Which one is best (and free).

Thanks in advance to anyone who answers me.

Lex

Two alkaline batteries have a full voltage of about 3.0 volts. Two NiCad or NiMH batteries have a full voltage of about 2.5 volts. Thus the low battery meter reading you see.

Open up memo pad. Start a new memo. Enter the following:

code:
. 7
[NiCad] will appear. If you do it again it will respond [Rechargeable Alkaline], and a third time it will respond [Alkaline]. Each time you do this it changes the battery type and prints the battery type it just changed it to. The voltage discharge characteristics of NiCads are very similar to NiMH, so this setting should work fine. It is what I use. Save or delete this memo, it does not matter.

I'm sorry if I am real clueless, but I can't get the command to work.

When I do the gamma character, it shows the gamma character in my memo. Then I hit . and I get a . at the bottom. Then when I type the 7, it erases the gamma character.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
Lex

UPDATE: ok I figured it out. I actually have to make a period not just tap once. Hopefully, the nicad setting will closer approximate my real battery levels.

But still anyone have any 3rd party apps that they like for a batter power (not using hackmaster)???

Lex

why not use batterymeter hack via
hackmaster?
You can pick batt type from drop down list,
choose to have meter shaded, and also
choose if you want % or Volts shown on meter
I like I alot, and is the only hack that
I currently use. And it doesnt cause any
problems with my other apps (AFAIK)

I use that on my old VDX, but alas, it does not seem to work on my Prism.
(dodges the barrage of rotten fruit...)

I'm just not sure I want to install hackmaster. I'm one of those overclockers/tweakers on a PC, but I'm not sure I want to start installing that stuff on my visor yet.

Is hackmaster pretty safe? Is this battery master part of hackmaster or do i get hackmaster then battery master installs into hackmaster?

Thanks!
Lex

Yeah well if you feel ok about overclocking
your home processor, you sure as heck should
be ok with installing hackmaster!
Its only software hacks we're talking about,
how much damage can you do to ROM?
First you need hackmaster, it allows you to
manage all other hacks, such as batterymeter hack!
Seriously though, like I said batterymeter hack
has caused no problems - of course there are other
hacks out there that can cause issue, but these
are usually documented.
Give it a whirl! I think you'll like it
now if you want to overclock your VDX, that's
another issue all together!

BateryMaster is a Hack. All hacks require HackMaster in order to work.

HackMaster is exceedingly safe. Some hacks, on the other hand, don't play well with other programs or other hacks.

"Don't Play Well" is defined as "can cause a Visor fatal exception requiring a soft or hard re-set"

I've got a set of about 6 hacks on my Prism. If you do a search on this board, you will find list of hacks that are safe, and ones that are suspect.
