Question

Is there a browser that will do 16 grays on a VDX (in other words, os 3.1)?

I know that Blazer and Browse-it will not. I am pretty sure that Avant-go won't, either.

Any suggestions?

The Visor Deluxe doesn't support 16 greys. The Platinum and Edge do.

Yes it does, but the app has to access the hardware directly. There are a ton of apps that do it, album2go, fireviewer, various paint/drawing progs, a slew of games.
I figured when Handspring partnered with Blazer, at least they would support it. No dice.

HandSpring wants you to buy a Platinum or Edge. That's why they have no interest in providing OS updates (I can't think of any other reason).

Ah, but it is not necessarily an OS problem; as I stated, I have apps that will do 16 grays on OS 3.1. If anyone should know how to quickly implement this feature, Handspring should (meaning Blazer). Encouraging customers to upgrade is one thing, but intentionally not supporting a specific feature on one of your platforms is another. (I am not speaking of OS upgrades, I am speaking specifically of Blazer. The OS debate has been waged efficiently elsewhere.)

Now that I've picked on Blazer, how come none of the other browsers have supported the VDX's 16 gray ability? If a silly free app like album2go can do it, how hard would it be for a commercial product to do so?

They can find out how to do 16 grays on older OSs by spending 10 minutes searching around the Internet. Therefore you have to assume that they know how. The issue is that implementing 16 grays with reasonable performance is a fairly significant amount of work. Chances are, that they believe that it is not worth their time. This is the decision that I made for a game that I am working on.

It is just not worth the extra work and risk of incompatibility.

I see... that makes sense, I suppose. The sad part is that every time I run into a little glitch like this, it makes me want a platinum even more. Especially with a $50 rebate running now. If they are plotting to get people to upgrade, then their plan is starting to work on me...

Yes, I am a sucker; but hey, my consumer confidence is good for the economy, right?
