i've read in other posts about people using various cables, etc to connect their stand alone gps units to visors (and other palms). this interests me, but why do you need to hook up an external gps, like a garmin, etc to a palm/visor unit? don't they already have a screen, etc? i assume there is a good reason, else people wouldn't be doing it. anyone shed light on this for me?

GPS add -ons

Older standalone GPS units, such as the Garmin 2,2+,12, etc, do not have mapping capabilities so the Visor with appropriate add-on software allows the addition of some of these capabilities. The combined capability is still much less than most of the current standalones though overall the price is less.

A very nice Color GPS setup

Here's something that you can do which is really nice. Run Solus 3.0 (available from www.delorme.com) along with a Visor Prism and a GPS. The color maps running on the Prism are just beautiful; it's just the sort of thing you would buy a Prism for.

Many GPS' can be used, such as the Earthmate from Delorme or the eTrex or GPS12 from Garmin are quite inexpensive.

Adapter cables which directly connect these GPS' to the Visor are available at www.markspace.com.
