Are you sure your card was charged? Mine has a "hold" for the amount, which happens when a merchant performs the initial authorization, but no charge has come through. Thus, the dollar amount is not part of my current balance, but my available credit is reduced by the amount. I believe holds can stay on for a week or so. This protects the merchant by not allowing the credit to be used between the time that the order is placed and the time of shipping. Check with your credit card people - if this is the case, then there's nothing wrong with it.
With regard to HS customer service - they're just doing what they're told - don't shoot the messenger...
