Lightbulb

I was in the Microsoft store in the Sony Metreon last night (San Francisco) when I saw a couple talking to a sales person about buying a Journada. [yeah yeah, we were waiting for a movie to start, okay? Cut it out with the M$ jokes, please]

I *sooooooo* wanted to lean over and say, "Pssst... you don't want that. You want one like mine" and show him my blue Vdx.

I've been in CompUSA when I've ended up talking people out of other PDAs to purchase Visors, and folks telling me I knew more than the salesclerks!

Anyone else find themselves evangelizing this way?

Oh yeah, uh huh. I do believe being senior editor for a Visor-specific Web site does in itself count!!! Heh.

Cool same here...!

I can't remember how many times I've been asked about my Handspring visor. Man... I have to confest that before last christmas a lot of strangers would be willing to talk to me four ours about my PDA. It used to be like, I was afraid to take my Visor out of its case because all of the sudden people would start asking me questions like: What is that? Is it a Palm? What is that you do in there?

But now it seems to be less. However, whenever I go to CompuUSA or Staples I always go to the PDA seccion. And you could see many guys standing by trying to decide which one to get. The other day I saw this guy who was about to buy a PalmIIIc because the price was really good for a color PDA. But I told him that the Handspring Visor was much better and in fact Palm wants to get rid of it because they are coming with better Color PDA's and that the PalmIIIc will be obsolete. He was like... yeah I see but the price is kind of high.. I told him it was worthy every penny. And after I showed him zap2016 demo and Albums to Go, he just fall in love with it and bought one.

You see how nice we are... Even though we don't get pay for that sale.

I don't know why but I would like to wake up one day and see everybody with a Visor on their hand. Can you picture that? I guess it's just a matter of time before everybody starts buying one.

Al

I was "evangilized" by a Handspring user in a Circuit City in April '00. I have done the same as the posts mention above numerous times.

Vdx Evangelism

I love my Vdx. I quickly tell others how satisfide I am with it and the company. Three times I needed company help. Three times they came through better than any ohter company I've delt with over the phone! I also feel that other companies have good products too. I try to be open minded and tell both the good and bad of Visor and the comp. The big thing that I do is try to convince people to get on board. Those w/o PDS's are just falling behind, miles per day! PDA's are an information revalution, and now with e-wallet they will be a financial revalution too. The springboard has the possibility of making the PDA a lifestyle revalution but that's not realized yet. I'm hoping the Geode will push it way forward on that front. With that said the VDX is for me and my family. But others may be more saticifide with other styles. After all people still by Apples don't they. Opps, didn't mean to open that barrel.

Smile Life is Fun with a VDX on your hip!

Yep, I'm guilty

I'm the kind that does his own research and concluded that a Visor was what I wanted before I ever got to the store.

I'm also the kind that convinced another shopper at Staples to but a Palm M100, since I knew they only had one Visor Basic (2meg) in stock, and I was wanting to get it for my wife.

Since I spent 5 formative years selling all sorts of stuff at a Kmart while in college, I find I'm always more knowledgable than the salesman, a better salesman, and have usually spent most of my time in Staples explaining how WRONG they are to the ([paid) salesmen there. I've actually heard a salesman tell another customer (who was inquiring about PDAs) to "Go ask that gentleman there", while pointing at me.

I want my commission, or I'm gonna stop hanging out at Staples!

Cool

I just do a quiet low key evangelizing with friends, family, and co-workers.

So far the number of people I've convinced to purchase a visor include three co-workers, my brother, my father, and my nephew. My sister is busy saving up for one.

My evangelical moment

I generally keep my VDx to myself, but when I was running through Best Buy the other day looking for SpringBoards (they're totally out of stock, wouldn't you know), I did "help" a couple find the glory of Handspring.

You know what the killer app was? The eyemodule. You folks might trash it for poor picture quality, etc., but it's one heck of a draw for the common consumer.

"You mean your Visor does the same stuff as the Palm, for the same price, but does THAT too?"

More rambling

Morris... How many Irish are there in North Dakota? (just kidding)

I'll agree that eyemodule has "some" appeal. You've just got to keep in mind that it ISN'T a replacement for high resolution digital cameras. Knowing that, it should be a $50 module, rather than a $140 one. You CAN buy a fairly nice digital camera for $150. If I can find an eyemodule cheap, I'll use it to snap pictures of my students to keep next to their names in the address book. It should help me get to know them quicker. I also often have to "describe" tools or specific router bits to students in my furniture design workshop. If I had a little snapshot of the tool on my Visor, I could just SHOW them what I was talking about. I got the Platinum, hoping it's 16 grayscales would make pictures a little more recognizable than the 4 shades on the Dlx.

The one app I've gotten the most people insterested in is Visor's Datebook+. It's got the most different "ways" of looking at your schedule. That seems to impress people who've seen the standard datebook on the palm. It kinda boors me, but that's OK.

I've impressed people with the Visor's calculator, after it was set to "Advanced" mode. (you did know about that, didn't you? Go to the calculator, hit the menu, select "options" and turn on advanced mode)

Trigonometry is impressive, but the metric conversions get them every time.

Yeah, I overheard someone looking at Palm-brand Palm's at the store and they said they didn't want a Handspring because they never heard of the company. I had to enlighten them on the originator's of the Palm. I think I converted them.

hmmm... sounds like an interesting Off Topic thread (or a new ad campaign for Handspring)... What would you do to get a Visor?

Unhappy I'm losing one!!!

I had one guy at work, who had just received a Palm IIIc, to ask the dept. to return it in favor of a VPR. I've been WOWing him with all kinds of stuff. I even did a little TealMovie demo of a dept. video.

Then, today, Tuesday, 9 January 2001, he advised me that he was going to get one of, one of, "The Other" PDAs. I couldn't believe my ears! I thought I had him sewn-up! Signed, sealed, and nearly delivered.

I'm hoping that tomorrow he'll say that he was just teasing.

Hell yes. I can think of several folks who have purchased a Visor due to my influence.

This overzealous Macintosh evangelist has converted six people to using Apple computers, but so far only one Visor convert. Personally I don't think the company would do nearly as well without us, they seems to miss certain marketing points of their products (like the way Mr. Jobs failed to mention that the new high end towers use a much improved G4 chip...).

As much as I evangelize, I don't tell people that want to play 3-d games 24/7, use a POS OS, or use their computer as a cup holder to get a Mac. I let those people suffer, hehe.

You ask for commisions, and you can get commisions! At Handspring.com there is an affiliate program. But it would seem awkward saying to someone, "Now that I've convinced you to get one, can you go home and buy it from this website?"
