My Visor is my 1st PDA and I would like to keep it in good condition. I have read about WriteRight and some people think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread, while others find it difficult to apply to screen, makes it harder to read, etc. As this is not an inexpensive product, I would like to get some other feedback

I've used writerights for quite some time. They are tricky to put on but not difficult. And they are not all that expensive when you consider the screen investment.

They're tactile feel is better than the screen because it does "feel" more like writing on paper then it does writing on glass.

I've tried other screen protectors that also peel on to the screen and without a doubt the writerights are the best.

The price of reduced screen clarity is too high for me. I do extensive writing on the screen itself, and I have not had any trouble not using WriteRights. When I did use them I didn't like them.

I think you have said it all in your original post.

It is a VERY personal issue. Some love them and some hate them. They are not expensive. I would recommend that you buy one and try it out. If you don't like it, don't use it. If you like it, buy more and use them.

i like writerights. they're a little annoying to apply, but not too annoying.

they work well. i write better on with one on than without.

I have used WriteRights on my Palm III since I took it out of the box. Despite the fact that I ruined two of the twelve screen protectors while learning the difficult technique of applying them to the screen, I have found them to be very useful. The trick to keeping them clear is to change them regularly (every month at least) and become a pro at applying them.

As an aside, I recently sold my Palm III on Ebay for $160 after owning it for 8 months. The purchaser cited my use of screen protectors as the sole reason he bid twenty dollars more for mine than for any others. (Palm IIIs are available for $179 from retail outlets). In my opinion, the $20 for the WriteRights was money well spent.

Hardware street.com seems to have the best price on WriteRights. I've never heard of them being in a store, but then again, I've never looked. My Visor (when I receive it) will by my first PDA, so you can bet I'll be looking then. In the meantime, here's the URL:

I just got them from Amazon. They're 21 bucks for a 12 pack. Be sure to specify the PalmIII style WriteRights.

Or, you can get the CK PDA Survival Kit for 29 bucks. Comes w/ 12 WRs, a fingertip stylus, a bunch of Brainwash screen cleaners, and a cupla screen cleaning cloths (fancy colored chamois). One cool thing about this kit is that since you can't specify which PDA it's for, it comes with WriteRights for everything from Palms to Handheld WinCE machines... Keep the palm size ones, fill out a form, slap a few stamps on it, send the improperly sized WRs back to CK and they'll send you another 12 properly sized ones for your trouble. Good deal, iffin you aks me.

I'm also a fan of WriteRights, having used them on my Newton MP2K ever since I bought it.

BTW, I emailed Concept Kitchen asking if they were going to develop a version specifically for the Visor, and they said "yes", and to check their web site in about a month (probably won't have my Visor till then anyway!). I realize that the Visor utilizes basically the same screen as the Palm III, but someone posted on a different thread that the writeright for the Palm III is not a perfect fit...

In my opinion the Palm III WriteRights ARE a perfect fit for the Visor.

On the Viosr, just over 1/32" on each side is not covered by the sticker. This is not much different on the fit with the III. The main difference in fit is the III screen frame tapers slightly from top to bottom, so the margin at the bottom is much less than at the top. The Visor is not tapered, so the margin is constant from top to bottom.

On the top and bottom, the margin is considerably less. Almost no screen is left uncovered.

I like the fit on the Visor because there is a little more tollerance for installation, and they are a little easier to get ahold of for removal.

I personally don't see how making a Visor specific WriteRight would make much (any?) difference.

Just to throw in my opinion about them, they do detract from the visibility some, but it is a small price to pay for the security.

(To echo a comment above, I sold my IIIx on eBay to finance my upgrade to a Visor, and mine sold for about $15 more than the next closest one closing that day. The buyer did not specifically tell me that WriteRights were the reason, but did note that in my add.)

Thanks all for the input. I took a look around on the web for the pda survival kit, as it seems to be the best value. Amazon is out of stock, and I guess not taking orders. Buy.com has two versions - the pdakit for 25.95 and the pdakit for palm III for 34.95. Anyone know the difference? I looked at KC's site, but could only find info on the kit for palm III

don't know about everyone else, but at almost $2 each for a small piece of plastic they are definitely not cheap in my book. here are some alternatives to save your hard-earned money:

* buy writerights for the newton and cut them down to size

* transparency paper also works; again, you'll need to cut them down to size

* use removable magic tape

* you know when you buy a brand new watch often times there is a protective plastic layer on the face (or on the IR window of remote controls, etc.)? well, i haven't tried this last option but i reckon this sticky film would work like a charm. anyone know where to get this precut and in mass quantities? wait, anyone know what i'm talking about?!

WriteRights may not be cheap, but the point I think needs to be made is that it's a worthwhile investment. It's $2/MONTH, *max*! I bought a pack of 12 WriteRights last year (right around this time, as a matter of fact), and I use them on *two* PDA's. I'm still only about halfway through that pack. You -can- use them for more than a month, although visibility suffers the longer you have them on. After paying more than $200 for my PDA, I'll gladly spend $2/month in preventative maintenance. This is one instance where you truly get what you pay for.

There are may popular home made solutions for screen protection. Check out http://www.palmgear.com/ GoTo Calvin's FAQ, under the hardware section there is a question about screen protection. Here Calvin lists popular commercial solutions like write rights and lots of home made solutions. I plan on trying the suggestion about a sheet of vinyl and perhaps a transparency over the graffitti area. By choosing your own vinyl sheet you shout have more control over the effect on the visibility.

I have been using Writerights for a week and am noticing little hen-pecks when I hold the visor up to the light.

Is this normal? I am hoping when I remove the protector it will be as new?

Use the WriteRights for CE devices. They are not as thick and easier to see through. The width is slightly less 1/32". I like them becuase they reduce the glare and provide a better feel with the stylus. They also reduce the effects of fingerprints.

I'm also using the ones sized for CE devices and don't mind the tiny gap around the screen edges. In fact it would be much harder to put the thing on right without it. Got mine locally at BestBuy.

I love my write-rites and, after leaving several tap scratches on my palm pro from playing too much yatzee, would NEVER write on a Palm or Palm compatible's screen without them... They are a little "fun" to put on but if your careful and use a credit card to seat them, there's few, if any, air bubbles...

I bought them at Fry's electronics about a year ago and have used five (two died in learning how to put them on)... I think I paid $24.95 for them...
