Hot Sync capabilities

Anyone know what hot syncing is capable of? I mean, how much data is backed up? I know that apps aren't backed up.

For instance, what is BackupBuddy good for if it's not a pain to reinstall programs after a data crash?

I just had to do a hard reset and when I synced on my computer at work (the one with the last sync before the reset) everything, apps & data came back as if I never resetted. Of course I have no idea if it was from BB or the normal hot sync but I really didn't care.

Jonathan, I'm in the same boat. Everything came back for me too, but I think that's BackupBuddy at work, restoring all the apps. But Hot Syncing should restore all databases.

The default hotsync will backup all of your data AND applications, provided they have the backup bit set. Most applications have the backup bit set for their data when installed, but if not, you can use a utility like Z'Catalog to set it.

Earlier versions of hotsync manager had some problems with backing up applications but that's been fixed for quite some time.

The only data that the default hotsync can not back up is the PIM database files (datebook, memopad, address, and todo). I guess it assumes that since you're hotsycning, your PIM data is protected as it is being synced to a desktop application anyway.

BackupBuddy does have the ability to backup these 4 PIM databases, and also provides some other very usefull functionality. But it is not required to get a full backup and automatic restore of all of your Palm files (other than the 4 mentioned above).

Wait, I'm a little confused. You're saying that hot syncin will NOT back up the for PIM databases? I thought that's primarily what it did. Actually, long before I was using BackupBuddy, hot sync always synchronized those four PIMs between my Visor and PC.

Or is that not what you're considering "backup"? I guess this is a semantics thing.

Yes that's what he's saying. I'm not sure I'd say it is semantics. There is a difference between synchronizing with your PIM and backing the data up. As bregent noted, the thinking was probably that synchronizing this data between the handheld and the pc made backing the data up unnecessary.
