Question Tivo vs. Ultimate t.v. ???

I am thinking about jumping into the world of digital recorders and was just wondering if anyone had an opinion as to which was better Ultimate t.v. or Tivo and why???

Post Privacy Issues With Tivo

I've not tried either service, but I do know that Tivo monitors everything you watch. A log is kept on their "servers" telling them what you have watched, presumably so they can sell the info to advertisers and/or use it themselves to target you with stuff they think you'll want to buy.

I have the ReplayTV 3030 and love it. The QuickSkip feature makes it super easy to skip over commercials. I would recoommend you give Replay a look as well.

Not exactly true. Although there has been a lot of discussion over this, you might want to read TiVo's official "Response to Privacy Foundation Report".

If you are concerned, you can Opt-out with Tivo so nothing is collected.

To the original question, I use Tivo and love it. Depending on your setup you can to standalone to use with your cable/antenna or go with an integrated unit that has the TiVo unit built into a DirectTV receiver. My next unit with be a dual tuner with DirectTv.

If you want more Tivo information (biased) then you should have a look at the TiVo Forum.

Thanks for setting us (or at least, me) straight. Tivo's position still sounds fishy to me, though.

I have a ReplayTV (Panasonic Showstopper) and I love it as well, nice thing is there is no monthly/yearly/etc.. fees... I got mine as a demo model for $150.. I upgraded the hard disk from 20gb to 80gb for another $150, I now have 80 hours to television recording time, and having digital cable something like the Replay is a must.. For longterm storage I also bought a Terrapin Video CD recorder.. (my dvd player can playback VCD's on CD-R's), A nice setup..

James, if you have the latest software update for the replay, using 2+quickskip, jumps 2 minutes at a time (same with the instant replay button, the number is the amount of minutes to jump), you can pretty much skip over the entire commercial block.

Into the Ether....

Do any of these units have integrated Ethernet? I waited ages for broadband and now that I have it I am rue to connect any electronic device back up to my phone line...I will invest to get a proper ethernet jack put into my wall behind the entertainment center, but I'll be damned if I am going to do it for a silly copper phone line.
