Benchmark Test and Overclocking

Has anyone done a benchmark test on their Pro?
I loaded Benchmark 2.0 and ran it just for fun.
the relative timings for my unit came to 162%
the Visor Platinum was rated at 204%
Visor Deluxe at 145%.

My question is, if the Pro and Platinum have the same CPU running at 33 MHz, then why the difference in the Benchmark results?

Has anyone run any overclocking software on the Pro, and what has been your results?

Unhappy

I've had the same results with Benchmark on my Pro. I was using a Platinum and switched to the Pro, and the Pro is noticeably slower. It's driving me nuts. I may have to go back to my Platinum.

i have been trying out FastCPU and running at 46 (33 is normal) my speed went up to 231%, the scale for the Platinum read 204%.

I havn't noticed and screen flutter or had any crashes, so i guess it is ok. although FastCPU has all the standard disclaimers. Since the battery is rechargeable, i have noticed a great drop in power. I have notices that some softer high memory applicatins do indeed run faster like my GPS map refresh, tinysheet spread sheets, planetarium and thinking db.

Could it have something to do with the extra 8MB of memory? Maybe PalmOS has issues with memory management that no one has addressed.

So the Pros have more RAM, but what about Neos ???

ok, i have a neo myself so i know it's got 8mbs.

what i ment was that since both the pro and the neo seems to be slower than the edge/plat; even when they have similar hardware. what would the problem be and what can i do to speed my visor up without overclocking it.

sorry
i misunderstood
i don't have a clue how to do it.
i think it might have something to do with the "waitstate" and i don't know how to change that, but i am sure we can.

Sorry - I didn't see anyting in this thread about the Neo, so I assumed it was on par with the Platinum. I thought the thread was just about Pro speed problems.

Do the Neos have identical benchmark results to the Pros?

they are both running the same processor, so one would think that they should both run at the same speed.

33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ

but i don't know a lot about in interior workings of the visor/palm devices nor computer's in general, except i know that when i but more ram in my desk to, applications did load and run faster, so if it works there, why wouldn't the same theory apply to the PDAs.

I think that this has something to do with the fact that the CPU is directly addressing the memory in this case, while in your compuer is it being addressed through the south bridge chip. That way there is processor overhead being reduced on your machine at home while the Visor does not have this luxury, so it must address the chips by the processor directly.

The reason your pc is faster with more memory is because the more memory it has the more stuff it can keep in RAM. Which means it has to access the hard drive (which is much slower than RAM) less often. The situation is not the same on a Palm because everything is in RAM all the time.

PalmOS apps basically run "in-place". There is no need to load a program because it is already in memory. Apps create a "workspace" when they are active, but I believe it is hard-coded (much like old DOS apps) and adding RAM doesn't do anything to help.

Indeed, but so are the Edge and the Platinum - which both have different benchmark results than the Pro. If the processor were the only variable, this thread wouldn't exist.

I had assumed that the Neo - which looks by comparison to be identical to the Platinum - to have the same benchmarks at the Platinum. I was under the impression that the only 33MHz machine suffering from a speed problem is the Pro.

I uesed to have a Platinum and now I have a Neo and as far as I know, the hardware specs are the same - only difference is the color. So it is very odd that Benchmark show the the Neo is a lot slower.

I hear that it is possibe to change the "waitstats' of the RAM in the Visors via apps like FastCPU and speed things up. But my must have program, PalmDragon, a addon that enables one to read Chinese on Palm conflics with it so anyone here wanna to try FastCPU out for us Neo users?

i ran fastcup on my pro for the trail period and it worked fine, no problems. but also didn't feel the need to buy it now, so when the demo expired, i deleted it. when i get back to using my gedo more and need faster map refreshing, i might buy it. i havn't tried any other overclocking software on my pro. i thought the neo and pro had the same inner works, just more ram in the pro.

Unhappy maybe because they fixed the screen flickering plob.

maybe for 2 reasons...
1.the battery type
2.in order to fix the screen flickering

looking at the Visor family technical .pdf at Handspring, I noticed Pro and Neo have slower springboard access time than Platinum or Prism. Also, the access times of Pro/Neo are the same and Platinum/Prism share the same times as well.

The only difference that comes to mind is both Pro and Neo Use Palm OS 3.5.2h3. Could this be causing the slower benchmarks and access times?
