It seems that Palms are used quite a bit for Bible reading on the run. Anyone know of the best Bible apps. Does one need a reading program as well as the Bible content? Sources? I've seen some NKJ content on the net. Is NIV available? Any neat programs for memorization? Any other neat stuff?

My favorite Bible prog, both for size and function is called Scripture (yes, you do need a special reader for this version.):

NIV costs $29 because it is still copyright protected.

I recommend going to the link "testing page" and getting the beta version of either KJV or RSV because this new version is compressed much more tightly. Then again, memory isn't such an issue on the Visor.

The best feature of a Bible on the Palm is the full search ability. You will be amazed the first time you use the "concordance" on this program. Amazing tool.

I use Scripture as well. Excellent program with great search capability. I bought the NIV for $20.

I checked out www.thefedors.com. It looks great. Just a couple of questions. Does the reader install when one installs the specific Scripture version. Or is this a two step procedure. Also, if the Bible is in several modules, does the concordance work among all of them or does one have to check each module?

I have tried Olive Tree's offering as well as Scripture, and the main feature that made me choose Scripture was the differences in the search feature. Scripture returns the search results listed out, with three or four of the words in the verse that precede the search word and it reference(and even tells you the number of 'hits' on your word). The list is 'hyperlinked' to the appropriate verse, so that a tap on the summary instantly jumps you to the verse. It also lets you specify your search to entire Bible, OT, NT, current book, Pentateuch, History books, Pauline epistles, etc.

Olive Tree's has the typical <find next> button. In other words, if you do a search on a common word, i.e. love, you would have to hit the <find next> button a 100+ times to get to a verse in Revelation (presuming you started the search in Matt., or worse, Gen.)

I was recently in Israel, and my tour guide would ask our group questions relating to the sites we were currently visiting. After a few days of my getting all his questions very quickly and correctly, he good-naturedly banned the use of Palm Pilots for question answering. By the end of the trip he wanted one! It would be the perfect tool for a tour guide.

Scripture is not yet perfect, (I would love to see wildcard and boolean search capabilities) but it is the best out there from my perspective.

You must install the reader separately, i.e. it is a separate file from all the modules, but you can install both the reader and any modules all in one sync. No need to install the reader and then go back and install modules.

The modules of different books are all included in a search; which ever modules you have installed it searches. Once installed the modules are seemless, you cannot tell the modules exist. It doesn't matter what combination of modules you have installed either. Back in the memory constraint days of my Palm III, I had installed the Pentateuch and the NT (modules 1, 7, & 8). Doing a search of the entire Bible would obviously only search these books, and no special provisions had to be made for partial installation.

OK, since there are a bunch of Bible Thumpers in this room, I may get some help :-) Anyway, I am a missionary in Mongolia, coming home next year for itineration. This means I will be booking a bunch of services. What I want to be able to do is go to a meeting of minister's, be able to pull up like a month at a time and see where I have services during that month to help schedule others. I.E. if I have a service Sunday Morning in one part of the state, don't want to schedule a service on the other part of the state that night. So really all I need to see is Wed nite and Sun morning/nite. Is there something out there that will do this, or will I have to look week by week?? I noticed that in the datebook week view that it truncates sat/sun to half the size of the rest of the week any way to change that??? I rarely get services on mon, tue, thu, or fri.

One of the things that sold me on the visor was the extra memory to hold a couple of versions of the Bible in there (I teach in a Bible College). It is my first PDA, so help!!

There is a GREAT Bible program out there by Laridian software (www.laridian.com) for CE devices. I have it and use it on a Casio E-100. I have the New Living Translation, and the program works really, really well.

So what, you ask, this is a Palm devices venue?

Well, you're absolutely right, Stanley. I had an e-mail confirming that Laridian will be releasing a Palm Bible by the end of this month. According to the e-mail, they are on track. If it works as well as the one for CE devices, it will be a great product. I've e-mailed the company founder about considering a version of their products on a Springboard, and he is pursuing that option.

Anyone looking for a Bible program for that new Visor WHEN if arrives (ever the optinmist!), I recommend you take a look at the Laridian website.

Also check out certain AvantGo channels. There is an "Our Daily Bread" on and a daily quiet time bible thing. It is great to hot synch in the morning and be able to have a daily dose of the big guy on the road (or on the way to classes for me)

Does anyone know the best way to do a flash card type thing where various verses could be loaded and flashed for memorization?

Do the Scripture programs allow you to copy and past into notes or flash cards of some type.

Scripture does not have a flash-card or daily-verse feature. I have seen descriptions for programs that do such things at http://www.palmgear.com . I don't use any of these programs because they are not freeware, and I wasn't willing to pay. Unfortunately, therefore, I cannot give any review of them.

As far as a month view goes Skief, the new advanced datebook in Visor will have a month view. As you can imagine though, fitting 31 squares in an area the size of the palm's screen does not allow for a lot of information to be displayed in the squares. What is displayed are various dots, squares, and lines that represent the types of appts. you have for each day. This may or may not help you, but it is a part of your Visor straight out of the box. (I am basing this info all on the current version of DateBk3 I have on my Palm IIIx. This is the datebook program that Visor abridged to make the advanced datebook. I do not actually have a Visor here in front of me.)

It's now MyBible from Laridian. Check out http://www.laridian.com/palm.

The program is $10 and Bibles are $19.99 (KJV) or $29.99 (NIV, NASB). If you're a Scripture user who bought the NIV or NASB you should have received an email. If not let me know (by email at [email protected] ).

Would someone explain how to deal with the various formats of books on line etc... I checked out that great site at www.memoware.com which have a number of religious books. They have them in various formats. What is doc, tealInfo, PalmMod etc... Where does one get the programs to read these formats?

Anyone else saddened by the $20 pricetag for the KJV of the Bible at Laridian??? Something that is not copywrited, so it is free to use (which it was previously), they jump the price to $20, add to that the $10 for the program, talking $30 for that, which you can get a real Bible printed on real paper, with a leather cover for that price. Here, no printing cost, just formatting cost which had already been done. I can understand charging for the NIV because it is not public domain, and you have to pay to use it, but not for the KJV.

I was about to go pay for the newer program to help support it, but when I saw what they wanted for each Bible program I decided that it would not be worth it. I'll stick with my older (although bigger) program for a while.

Actually I was disappointed. Personally I managed to download the free software before the company was sold (or whatever happened). I think that there will be far fewer people using this software if it is more than the price of a "real Bible". $30 is actually $45 for us Canadians. Hopefully the pricing will change or someone else will fill the gap. Perhaps the Gideons? I wish Laridian well but I do hope they rethink things.
