Unhappy Edge Hard Reset...

Today at school in 6th Period, I flip open my Edge to put in the homework for the week, and it doesn't turn on. Not by power or the app buttons. So I reset it, and the screen starts flashing the "Palm Computing Platform" screen over and over. Which I believe means it is resetting itself in an infinite loop. If I touch the Power Button, it'll ask me if I want to Hard Reset by pushing up. I try soft resetting a few more times, but it does nothing, so I just Hard Reset . I have no idea what the problem was. Good thing I synced in the morning . I only used my Edge twice today, once in 5th period, then in 6th to put the homework in. Weird...never happened to me on any device before...

I couldn't even use it while I was waiting for my piano lesson...it had nothing on it!

Well, I hate to see somebody join this particular club, but 'welcome!' What's the weather like over there? Have you been noticing any problems with static electricity?

We're like the Freemasons, but instead we're the recepients of a vast conspiracy, not the instigators.

Watch it like a hawk. If the Edge so much as flickers, return it and replace it with something else.

I bought it off someone on the boards, can I still return it for a replacement? Any ideas what to do? Seems to be working fine...for now...

If it's still under warranty, you can get it replaced for another Edge. but if yours seems ok, you're probably better off with it than with the Refurb that HS would send you.

...could just be a fluke, it happens. Just make sure that you are backing up on a regular basis.

Well, yes and no. It's not good in that such things happen to a significant number of Edges. However, it is good in that you have a base of experience to draw upon. My Edge worked fine for quite a while despite many such reports when they first were released. Around October, though, I had the digitizer glitch happen to me (all input registered as a menu tap). Soft and hard resets did nothing except send it into a high-power-consumption mode which killed the battery in a few hours. After recharging, it was apparently fine (although I had a warranty replacement sent anyway). In retrospect, I've begun to suspect that many of the problems are static related. At the time that my flake-out happened, the weather had just turned cooler and I was spending a lot of time in the central office here (which is kept at a lower humidity level due to the switches). Cooler and drier weather tends to lead to static electricity. Add to the mix a metal case carried in one's front pocket, and it's not beyond the bounds of believability that a little zap may have flaked things out. That's why I asked what the weather was like. I'm curious to see if additional evidence may either add weight to the theory or show it to hold water like a sieve.

Did you register it? When I was considering selling mine, I emailed Handspring about this. The response I got was that the new person could register it for a full year's warranty. Sounded rather odd to me, but that's what the email said. I kept it, so I'll post it when I get home.

Thanks for the replies. It's been quite cold, not windy or humid, just cold air and draft. It seems to be okay for now, though I'll be much more careful. I don't want to go for a refurb unless I have to...Just got CF card and using my friend's module for now. Does anyone know any good CF software for the InnoPocket? Particularly a backup program? Thanks...

The aluminum casing is nice, but it gets cold really easy. When I pick it up in the morning, it feels very cold. Though I still love it.

Having you been getting static shocks from touching doorknobs or similar items?

CardBackup worked very well with the Matchbook, I have heard good things with the InnoPocket. In shareware, it allows full backups and restores, registered you can schedule, backup and restore individual files, and access multiple backups. Very nice. With the latest software from Kopsis, you can even store it on the FlashRam on the Innopocket so it can restore from a Hard Reset. Get it.

Not really, a few times closing the car door. But you can get that from the static on your clothing. Haha, my edge is falling apart...I found out I'm missing a screw on the bottom, and there's a scratch...anyone have an extra screw? I think it'll be okay, just the peace of mind I guess...

Thanks, I'll keep it on my computer. Though I'm using my friend's CF module until I can get one. His visor dropped on the floor...he won't need it for a while... Still trying to get a good one! No one has any CF modules!

!!!!!!!! This is pissing me off!!! It hard reset again today. I let my friend borrow my Edge, and he says when he turned it on, the screen was already reset, in the calibration screen. I don't know what it is. I let him have my CF module as well, so he could beam stuff off it. WTH is going on with the Edge?!?! It's suppose to be reliable... Any ideas of what to do or what's going wrong!? I need a backup module...my gosh, that CardBackup is ok, but the thing is...it backed up VFSHelper, which is running at the same time, which causes the unit to hard reset again, just great huh???

Yeah. Maybe you really need to get a decent Backup Module. I myself dont trust the BackupBuddy s/w that all my friends recommend.

Even so, I don't want to be freakin restoring all the time. I had no problems like this with my previous units, and I've used mainly the same software set. Apps, hacks, etc. Maybe its the CF module and software???

Seriously, bud. You need to call Handspring and get a warranty replacement done on it. Everything you are describing is *not* good at all.

I have a Visor Edge and I zapped that thing all the time.. ended up needing a static matt for my office...

Well, I usually don't set VFSHelper to activate after a reset..

...if you get the registered version of CardBackup, you can restore individual files and maybe even leave certain files out of the backup. to be honest, whenever I back up, I disable all hacks, drivers, and extensions.

I've had that happen to me, on my pro, also my deluxe, and my first pda, a palm vx. Make sure that you don't try and run a application twice, or continue to try to. It's not a defect, i would say its like a blue screen in windows. Make sure youve got backup buddy installed, and or a backup module. It"s not limited to handspring products, trust me.

I'm starting to think it's more than the Edge, maybe that new CF Module I got. I just got back from a trip to San Francisco, and I was depending on my Edge to last through it! It made it through the first day! I showed my bro the CF Module, and when I pulled it out, it crashed. I soft reset, but it never left the "Palm Computing" screen, so I HAD to hard reset, couldn't even use it on the trip back...now this is unreliability I CAN NOT take! I depend on it for TOO much stuff to have it do this! I'm guessing it has to do with the module and the static electricity. Lint in my pocket causes static electricity, maybe that's causing it to hard reset! Now why didn't Hawkins think about that when he designed this thing? It's suppose to go in your pocket right??? I'm not only saying about restoring from a backup. If this thing didn't hard reset, I wouldnt have to restore! I've NEVER in my experience had to hard reset any of my units before. This is ridiculous! I love this unit, but I hate all the hard resets. I'll give it one more chance, otherwise, I'll sell it off to go for a Sony S360 or maybe a T415. I don't want to bother with gettin a replacement...grrr....
