Lightbulb VisorCentral Should add a real Chatroom!!

I think message posts are nice but sometimes we want to chat in real time with other members in VC. What do you guys think?

Al

I think that this would be fun but we would need mods just for this area. If this happens I would be willing to be one.

I wouldn't mind it a chatroom at all. I'd love to be a moderator! (now is the time where we all have a gooooooood laugh.)

But I would think of it to have a casual conversation & 1-on-one help for the Visor. And I would (if I were you) , make an off topic section.

But please, do not make it a Java chat. Omniweb doesn't support it. If anything, make it a Flash chatroom, or an HTML chatroom (ala BeSeen.com) They are not hard to make (you can make em on servers like Tripod!) and would garuntee the most compatability.

Agh, I can't spell.

The only area I would consider that could be somewhat difficult, since I've never used vBulletin or whatever the heck you call it.

But we DO need a real-time chat room.

I only come to read the messages but sometimes it would be nice to chat. It would remove a lot of messages that are pointless to me.

We once did have a chatroom. And we kept it for a month, but than it got pulled. I myself want an IRC chatroom, with a java client on the web.. IRC rocks.. IF you want to talk with membors.. check their profile. Most people have an IM handle in their .(I know I do!)

I didn't care for the chat room when it was tried before ...

1. usually only a few people were in it at a time .. so true dicsusions were few and far between..
2. for the VC addicts among us, this would mean you would have to hang out at VisorCentral 24/7 to keep up on everything thats happening ... you have to sleep ..
3. a significant amount of people would hop into the chat channel looking for help -- so basically the chat room would become a realtime help system, rehashing a lot of the same solutions over and over again (I tend to believe most people do a quick search before posting currently, however, they would prefer a live chat over searching (as it would be quicker and address their problem precisely)
4. Lots of the off topic stuff would probably just occur on the live chat, and I for one, like going through that particular forum to see what type of odd ball stuff shows up

in anycase, I don't really care for the idea --- however, I *DO* like scheduled live-chats when certain individuals (maybe like James or Marcus from PC expo or a rep from handspring, etc...) are featured and the chat room is available for that ...

just my 2 cents..
joe

Featured chats would be awesome. If we ever implemented it, it would be cool :-D lol.. me grammer no. hey.. no.. And it would be nice to get the big guys talkign to us to.. (jeff.. donna.. etc)

We would just need a system - not IRC. a modded question one.. like what red herring uses..

I think a chatroom could harbor good random conversations. But, it could also be dead at times. Having a "dead" section on the webpage could reduce the appeal of VC to advertisers which would be bad (they need money to run this free-site!). I personally want one, but bad people could misuse it. Moderation could be good. All VC Staff could be moderators automatically and specifically authorized veteran users could be mods. But it's been tried before apparently (I never noticed it I guess) and failed. I could go either way really, but I voted for yes.

i would love a chat room because many times i have simple quetions that dont require a new thread for an answer. also it is faster than waiting a day. and they visorcentral wouldnt require a moderator, i saw some chatrooms that have scramblers that automaticly detect and scramble *bad* words. also i dont think it would ever be dead because its early Early in the morning and people like robert sibell, miradu2000, vinney, etc are still up posting.

thanks,
robert

You can make AIM chatrooms? I use AIM for all my IMing needs so if that's possible, I'd be open to that.

I'm not sure where we stand on chat. It would be nice, but realtime is much harder to moderate.

I do like the idea of featured chats, though. We'll see.

Arrow Nice Addition

Featured chat would be a nice addition to VC/ The last live chat experiment flopped. Most of the folks here do not ahvethe time to sit in chatrooms all day. Besides I would rather post something in the forums that others can see instead of repeating myself over like a tape recorder.

Sorry to bring this topic back up but when did VC have a chatroom? I dont post at the UBB all to often but I have been coming to VC pretty much daily since it opened and I never noticed the chatroom.

Also I think VC should have a chatroom, but when it opens the staff should make sure everyone knows about it.
