Unhappy

I just got a Visor Platinum on Friday and I like it. However, I need to work out some problems.
1. Switchhack doesn't seem to work with anything. Causes all kinds of problems. I had to uninstall hackmaster and all hacks.
2. Afterburner doesn't work. The screen goes grey and 33Mhz is not a choice. I would like to use it to slow things down for some games, etc.
3. My iBiz Keyboard doesn't work.
4. My GPS with software doesn't work.
Despite problems 3 and 4, the serial cradle does work as I tested it.
5. Hotsync will not use USB unless I load the hotsync program and choose the custom option. If i just tap the hotsync button on the cradle it tries to go serial, not matter what I have set.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Barry

There are now connection setings in the Prefs app in OS v3.5. It might be that you have only the serial connection enabled. There is a USB/serial option that should work for syncing.

This might also be your problem with the keyboard and GPS... check the User's Guide on the Handspring CD for details.

Question clarification

I realize it has connections settings and I even tweaked the speed a little higher on the USB, but what do you mean by "enabled"? THey all seem to be enabled. PLease clarify. Thanks.

bchristian: click on your hot sync icon in the system tray and if you have both Serial and USB local hot sync's checked then your going to get a conflict/or at least an attempt to use the serial connection first. These should be listed at the top of the popup menu.

Someone else reported the SwitchHack probablem. It may be related to the 3.5 OS. I believe even the PalmGear description page states that it won't work with 3.5 but don't hold me to that.

You stated that going to the hot sync manager and custom settings you were able to get it to sync. I'm uncertain what you're describing but I belief that if you turn off the serial sync on the same menu- you should be good to go.

Post Hotsync is working fine

Hotsync is working fine and I have tried it with both checked and with one checked. That isn't my problem. I just can't get anything else to work with the serial port. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Barry

Barry,

I'm unclear on something: Are you trying to get another device to use the serial port. If so is that other device another Visor/Palm unit or is it something totally different?

If it's another device then the installation of the new desktop software might be causing the conflict and then you may have to reinstall that other device and that will probably fix it.

If I'm off base here - please shoot me. It's late and my brain has been engaged to long for today.

Question I will start again. :)

Let me explain again. I had a Palm Vx that I used an iBiz keyboard and a GPS with. I made the cables to work with the cradle serial cable. It still works on my Vx with the keyboard and the GPS. I have also tested my new Visor serial cradle with my PC to make sure the cradle is okay. However, when I try to use the keyboard or the GPS with my Visor and Visor serial cradle, it does not work. I have them setup identically (the Palm Vx and the Visor). Any ideas on getting the keyboard and/or GPS working?

Thanks

Ok, now I understand better - here's my only other suggestion/issue. The Vx has 10 pins - the Platinum should have 8 pins. Part of the pins that the Vx uses are for external devices that are now redirected to the Springboard slot.

My guess is there are two pins that your using on the Vx that aren't available to you through the cradle. You are beyond my arena of knowledge know with this issue, sorry. I'd bet James can help you tomorrow.

The hotsync connector (and serial cradle) on all Visors uses only two serial signals - RX and TX. The Palm Vx hotsync connector (and serial cradle) use handshaking lines in addition to RX/TX. If your keyboard or GPS are trying to use hardware handshaking, they will not work with a Visor unless you can custom wire a cable to fake them out.

Angry Well that stinks

Why would they do it so differently? I bought this thing thinking I was getting something at least as good as what I had and hopefully better. I have had software compatibility problems, hardware compatibility problems, etc. Am I rushing to judgement or did I make a mistake in switching to a Visor?

Maybe, but I doubt it. Give it a week, keep us informed, ask us (and Handspring's tech support) questions, and then decide.
