It seems that my HotSync manager is acting strange lately. If I exit it and attempt to restart it, Windows gives me a Fatal Exception 0E at 0028:CD96A0D0. This also happens if I deselect Local Serial and then try to select it again. Any ideas?

Question

Not so much solutions, but some ideas to start the troubleshooting process:

  • What version of Windows?

  • If you have a recent "known good" copy of the registry, try restoring it. This assumes that you haven't installed any new software since you made the copy . . .

  • Does HotSync Manager work OK on first booting?

  • Have you checked Device Manager recently? Any chance that there is a new conflict or device driver problem?

  • What version of Windows? - 98SE

  • If you have a recent "known good" copy of the registry, try restoring it. This assumes that you haven't installed any new software since you made the copy . . . - Tried that when I first noticed the problem a few weeks ago.

  • Does HotSync Manager work OK on first booting? - Yes, that's the most puzzling part, but it gives the Fatal Exception if you try to logon as a new user. If I remove it from the Startup folder and try to start it manually, I get the error as well.

  • Have you checked Device Manager recently? Any chance that there is a new conflict or device driver problem? - No conflicts or driver problems

Question

Running out of ideas here . . .

  • After closing HotSync Manager, try running Task Manager. Is HOTSYNC.EXE still listed as running?

  • Are you using both a serial and a USB cradle? If so, try using only the one cradle, and reconfigure HotSync Manager to reflect this change. Since you are using Win98, I'd suggest standardizing on the USB cradle. In any event, configure Hot Sync Manager so only one interface is active.

  • Have you installed any third-party conduits recently?

  • After closing HotSync Manager, try running Task Manager. Is HOTSYNC.EXE still listed as running? - No, not running... and using System Information it doesn''t appear that any of the HotSync DLL's are still loaded either.

- Yes, using both. Even disabling the serial doesn't seem to make a difference.

  • Have you installed any third-party conduits recently? - Since first noticing the problem, the only thing that's changed conduit-wise is that I'm now running the beta of PocketMirror 3.0. I can't remember if the problem occured before that or not. Today, I installed QuickSheet which is what prompted me to post this because the install had to shut down HotSync and then restart it (which of course caused the error)

OK. I'm inclined to blame the beta of PocketMirror, but it is always easy to blame beta software . . .

Alternately, you might want to try going beyond merely disabling one of the cradles - I'd actually uninstall the device, disconnect it from your system, reboot, reconfigure HotSync Manager, and test. If uninstalling the serial device doesn't work, reinstall it, uninstall the USB cradle, reboot, reconfigure HotSync Manager, and retest. If nothing else, this will narrow things down further.

Ok... last night I did some more "testing". Four times I closed HotSync and attempted to restart it. Four times it worked! This morning, I boot up, surf a little, close HotSync, try to restart it, and, POOF!... fatal exception!

I'm really confused now. Maybe tonight I'll try the hardware disable/enable routine. Seems like it's got to be software related but who knows... maybe a driver or registry setting is corrupt.

HotSync Fatal Errors

After a month of perfect HotSyncs, yesterday I started having the exact same problem. HotSync failed on every try. I rebooted, and reset the Visor, but still had the problem. I fixed it this morning, by completely uninstalling the HotSync software and all conduits, and then reinstalling them. Its working perfectly now.

Hope this helps.
