I was wondering which Palm Updates I can install on my visor if any. Does my Visor even need any of them, or has it already been updated by Handspring?

I installed the 3.1.1 update without problem and it has taken care of ghosting/streaking.

Thanks,

Question

About the 3.1.1 update:

Is it supposed to reduce or remove the streaking? On mine it just seemes to reduce it, or not do anything, I am having trouble telling.

Also, is it supposed to change the OS version in Info->Versions, since it just seemes to add a new entry, "Update 3.1.1........v.3.1.1", rather than change the Palm OS version.

Just wondering.

Cool

I thought the Visor couldn't be upgraded due to not having a flash ROM.

But I did look at 3Com and they say installing upgrade 3.1.1 over 3.0 has no effect - although there is a 3.02 that deals with the beam off issue and something about settings for the modem that does work over Palm OS 3.0.

Can we really beneift by installing the upgrade files on a Visor?

Just so you know, the visor has OS 3.1, so 3.1.1 should work. Even though the visor doesn't have flash rom OS 3.1.1 is a patch, meaning it istalles itself in ram, like a normal program. However, OS 3.3 won't work, since it trys to rewrite the rom, requiring the Flash-Rom feature.

That brings up an interesting point. Since the Handspring 8 MB upgrade is flash memory, can you install OS 3.3 into there? Could somebody try it and tell me if it works.

Thumbs down

IMHO,

I wouldn't install any update that does not come from Handspring because of the Springboard module and USB functionality.

If you are going to risk it, make sure you have everything backed up before trying it.

I just put in OS 3.1.1, and it seems to work fine. It doesn't overwrite any of the system files (ie-Hotsync, General OS files, or anything). It just installs a patch file, sorta like adding on a bug fix into a program. It doesn't reinstall the program, just adds file that contains updated instructions for anything that is incorrect.

Lightbulb

The Visor does have flash rom .... where do you think the os and software comes from when you first put in the batteries ...?

Stored on the visor perhaps ? maybe in flashrom ? Posibily not addressable flashrom.

The reason that most flashrom software does not work is that the programs that access flashrom check the processor and IF there is flashrom and assume that if the PALMOS devise is running a dragonballEZ processor that it is a palmIII IIIx or V and those all have 2 megs of flash rom ... the Visor has less that half a meg ... thats why the updates work .... I am not saying that I would suggest loading a version of palmos that does not have springboard support over a version that does. I fully plan on getting all my updates from handspring.

Note: The differience between OS 3.1 and 3.1.1 is usb support.

Smile

Visor uses ROM, not FlashROM. They're totally different.

Bane,

Dunno where you got your info, but it's quite a bit off. xjx is correct - there is no FlashROM on the Visor, so the FlashROM upgrades DO NOT work. The upgrade patches (like 3.1.1) do work since they don't modify the OS in ROM, but work on top of it in a sense.

Not USB for the patch. According to the Palm Website::

The Palm OS v3.1.1 Update provides the following enhancements to your Palm V or Palm IIIx connected organizer:
Reduces the faint background lines (sometimes referred to as "streaking") visible in applications with grid patterns, such as the month view in Date Book, on some Palm IIIx devices. (Palm V organizers are not affected by this change).
Prevents "up" scroll button activation (sometimes referred to as "clicking") which can occur whenever an alarm dialog is displayed and the up scroll button is pressed. Once the software is installed, the up scroll button is disabled whenever an alarm dialog is displayed.
Corrects two internal grayscale palette values.
