Question

Has anyone heard any new rumors about handspring's plan to implement a colored version of the Edge, I'm waiting to see how it will compare with the M505 and the Clie before I decide to upgrade my Visor Deluxe. the last rumor/news I heard was that they're coming out sometime late September. I don't know if i can stand to wait that long...

I think this is the "Holy Grail" of PDAs many of us are waiting for. HS is one of the only co's now w/out a thin, color model. Still, word is they "want to make sure they do it right."
At this writing (i.e., post-Handera & post-Clie2), "do it right" may now mean "soft Graffiti" + high-res screen (PLUS OTHER GOODIES, HS, PUHHHHLLLLEEEEEEEZE!) ... uh, to please ... uh, users like the one writing this post, heh-heh....
So, while I guess we can HOPE "any day now" ... the reality may be later in the yr., etc.
Believe me, you're not the only one salivating....

I hope it comes soon!

Screen of Prism

Form of M505

Theme of Edge

HandEra Graffiti

Clie Resolution

HandSpring Expandability

Palm Style & Quality

HandEra Versatility

Clie Capability.

---------------------------------------

Oh wait, that's too much to ask for. But something that is close would be great! I hope whatever they come out with gets a little more fame than the Edge. Maybe it'll be more groundbreaking.

Actually, I have a hint that it will be the color HandEra... if it ever arrives, that will be the "Ultimate Palm Machine!" They seem to focus on the "power users," who want the most Bang-for-the-buck. It's about time!

HandEra is vaguely interesting, but they have chosen to go it alone and so it is going to be dead-end technology. Also, I have never noticed anyone point it out, but the new Clie is higher resolution than the HandEra even with the the soft input area collapsed.

Cool Thar raises a good Q:

Here's an idea. Why don't we start a company that builds custom Palm Handheld devices? Similar to Gateway, but this one lets you mix N' Match! Want Mp3 support? It's on there. Want a full-size high-rez screen? It's on there! Want USB instead of serial? It's on there! Don't want a silkscreen? Don't get one. Don't want 4 buttons? Don't use it!

I'm sure someone could find a way to do this. Maybe having its own r&d division?
Sure, it'd be more expensive, but it'd be worth it!

I guess HS is waiting to see which of these new pda's will sell... And it's probably a good strategy. I hope they don't bungle it up and come up with a half-baked product that only a few people would want.
Personally, the most compelling reason for me to upgrade would be the screen... Sony's implementation of the 320 x 320 screen was something that surprised many of us. This at the least removes one advantage (not that there are a lot...) of the PPC over the PalmOS - hardwarewise. I hope HS chooses to go with 16 bit color...

For myself I don't as much care if it is the form factor of the Edge. I have a VDX and it lives in my cargo pocket on my pants. It also get banged up and I think the edge could be too easily hurt for me. I would like color but don't have a lot of money to spend so something in the VDX form factor but in color I would consider buying. Another aspect that plays into all of this is being a Palm Developer, which is free, and getting their devices cheap.

Just my thoughts

How much would this thing cost? $700 for what will be the Visor Twist or Visor Snap? I'm not shelling out that money.

$500 is the absolute limit for PDAs. No one is going to buy them higher than that price.

Apparantly you haven't seen the price of the iPaq. It has consistantly sold for well over $500.
