Question

So...I have been hearing about this "MemPlug" Smart Media adapter for our Visor's....http://www.memplug.com/product_info.html
but so far I have been unable to find a dealer...

....does anyone know anything about this product and when it might be sold in the US? Or if it is already can you post some further info.

Thanks...Josh

It was my understanding they had already shipped to PalmGear but they say they're not yet ready for sale. MemPlug's site said "within 3 business days" last week but now its gone.

I know people from "Pi" visit these boards so maybe we could get an answer from them?

I just bought memplug and 64 mb smart media
It's cheaper if you buy the smart media separately.
I got 64 mb san disk smart media card for 72.00 at buy.com and The memplug is 49.95 at palmgear.com
so it's just 122.00 for 64 mb smart media with memplug!

Smile Woohoo! memplug and 128 mbs on the way

Thanks for the Palm Gear tip! I have been checking every few hours for the last couple days and now my order is in. I ordered 2 64 mb smart media cards from newegg a couple days ago for $59 each and also got the little usb Zio smart media reader for $26. Can't wait to load up 30 or 40 minutes of gMovies on the memplug!

Thanks for the update....ordered mine tonight....hope they still have them in stock!!

One message from PalmGear says they are backordered until the 25th....another says they are in stock? Hmmm, I guess we will see.

Now that we can get these, will they work for what we need? I see a couple of people saying that they are going to load up their cards with videos and picts and things. To my understanding this card will only hold files. And that in order to use them you must transfer them to your internal memory on your Visor. If thats the case, it will suck sort of. I sure hope that you can access videos and pictures, etc. FROM the smart media cards themselves.

Anyone have any thoughts??

These guys for real?! Some of their prices are extremely low + free FedEx shipping is great, have you had previous experience with them? I don't need 64mb for my Visor but I wouldn't mind getting a couple for my Rio.

No, you can use a stand alone USB smartmedia reader/writer hooked up to your computer, no need to transfer them to the visor's memory first. Good thing about that is you can play video's larger than 8mb! Yes, you can directly access the video's and pictures from the card itself.. From what I read, you will also soon be able to read text files directly from the card as well (no need to ever put it into your visors memory)!

Smile Thanks for supporting Memplug

Just want to clarify some points:

Memplug provide user friendly utilities to transfer files between Visor and SmartMedia. (eg PiMover, provide all file management support include rename file, create directory etc.)

It also provide utility for backup your Visor (PiBackup: which act like backup module)

And it also has PiViewer for directly decode Jpeg image taken by your Digital Camera.

What's more, we have co-ordinated with our 3rd party developer to provide a movie player which directly access the smartmedia for movie files. (I have a 12MB color movie reside on my 64MB SmartMedia card now :-)

I have completed the CspotRun (the famous DocReader) port to direct access the SmartMedia card document. Which will be available for download later in Memplug's webpage as a bonus application for our Memplug's users.
( My document collection is in my smartmedia card now :-)

Besides, we also has a developer area to encourage other developers to add Memplug's support in their application. It can be expected that more and more applications will be develop by 3rd party to support Memplug's user.

Thank you for supporting Memplug.
We will keep Memplug improving!

Question MemPlug backorder

Can anyone tell me if the MemPlug is now in backorder?
If so, I may get one from Japan directly... or anywhere else I can buy it.

I received an email confirming that mine shipped this morning (3/16) from PalmGearHQ. I have never dealt with this company before and not sure if they provide a tracking service or not. I shipped mine via US Priority mail, so it should be here by (CA) Monday or Tuesday (3/19). We will see.

PSWhat SmartMedia card readers are you people using on USB equipped Macs?

Thumbs down Sticks Out The Top

One of the drawbacks from the MemPlug (testers please correct me if I am wrong) is that with it installed in the SPB module and your Smart Media card inserted, you wont be able to snap on the Visors cover. According to the FAQs on MemPlugs site, the SMCs will stick up a bit so you pull it out. I think that its lame for that. My RIO takes the card in and has a spring to eject it. I wish that MemPlug had gone this route.

Perhaps I am wrong and you can still use the Visors coverwont know until I get the thing.

Question Are any smartmedia cards better than others?

I ordered the MemPlug and need to know if any smartmedia card brands are better than the others.

I've seen dane-elec, delkin, fujifilm, goldenram, Kingston, iomega, Lexar, memorex, Microtech, Olympus, periphereal enhancements, PNY, sansdisk, samsung, verbatim, viking, and toshiba so far.

Smile Visor cover fits on the front but not the back.

Visor cover fits on the front but not the back. This is OK for those of us that use belt clip type cases, but for those that use separate cases that rely on the "cover" built in the case, snapping on the back of the Visor, it won't work. I don't have my MemPlug yet but I'm assuming that it will be like the original MatchBookDrive module for Compact Flash cards.

Thanks for the input....I didnt even think about the cover on the front not effecting the SPB module which is in the rear....sorry I have only had my Visor for about 3 days now.
