Going to California

My wife and I are planning a 10-12 day trip to California next May.

Our basic Itinerary is to fly into Sacremento, rent a car, visit the Napa Valley area, then San Francisco, then Monetary area, then fly back out of San Jose.

With the car, we plan on side trips to different areas; except for San Francisco, which will be local transportation.

Looking for suggestions as the type of car to rent. We are thinking along the lines of a Camry type. Not sure whether a SUV type would be better.

Based on the cities/areas you listed, I'm assuming US1 is going to be the main route you take?

My personal favorite would be to do the route by motorcycle (preferably BMW ), however, my second choice would be a ragtop Mustang GT.

Oh, and definitely take the time to visit the Monterrey Aquarium. Of the places I visited the last time I was out there, the aquarium was probably my favorite.

I second that. Monterrey Bay Aquarium is a first class aquarium. And it's ever so close to several wineries.

Hmm, I did Meteor Crater and the Grand Canyon from Phoenix in one day, but I doubt your wife would let you drive like I did.

You're right, though. Someplace like Yosemite really requires several days to fully absorb.

I strongly suggest you get tickets to a whale watch while in Monterey. At the very worst, you'll spend a couple of hours on a boat in the Pacific Ocean. In San Francisco, the Palace of the Legion of Honor is showing an exhibit of Egyptian art from the British Museum, which is well worth the time.
