I'm currently on my third replacement VDX and it is about to become a fourth - first one had dust or something trapped between the layers of the display, second had a shifted LCD and a strip missing from the display, third which I just got has a cracked case out of the box so now I have to go back for my fourth one. I've wasted time and money on repeated trips to my supplier and it's getting annoying.

I remember hearing stories of quality problems with early models, but it seems to me that Handspring still have problems here. Many people have also had problems with the paint on the Platinum and Prism. Do Palm have these problems with their products?

These problems along with the ongoing lack of flash RAM in their products is pushing me towards Palm. I want a colour model and I'm definitely giving serious consideration to the m505 rather than the Prism.

God or Handspring (or both) must hate you. I got one of the first models in November 1999, and haven't had a single problem with it. In fact, a guy here at work recently told me that mine was in much better shape than his six month old Palm IIIx.

Granted, I did buy direct from Handspring (as have 5 or 6 of my friends that have VDXs, also with no problems). Where did you buy these? Sounds like the retailer is being a little heavy-handed with (semi) delicate electronics.

My only problem with my VDX (which i bought through handspring) was about 3 hours after i got it, it fell off my desk and shattered the screen Thankfully when i called CS i was given a supervisor right off the bat and did not have to pay the $85 for the screen replacement

Talking Yeah...

I am the owner of 2 Palms, and my Visor arrives tomorrow!

My IIIxe has never had a problem, and I've dropped it from my desk onto a hardwood floor surface a few times. Screen is still intact, although I'm not gonna push my luck. The graphite (black) case of the IIIxe has a slightly downscale texture to it, but it's screwed together quite well, even with it's Mexican workmanship. (j/k)

My first VIIx (VIIIx if you go to macconnection, lol) came with defective memory, meaning I could only use the Flash RAM or I'd have to do a hard-reset. (tisk tisk, and it's made in America!) DON'T TAKE CHANCES! IF YOUR PDA CRASHES LEFT AND RIGHT, TAKE IT BACK ASAP!

My replacement however, has been downright Stellar.

Palm's got more of a reputation for quality than Handspring does, you seem to have gotten a row of bad ones, which could also happen with Palm, but it's less likely.

I bought a Visor Deluxe from Best Buy in July2000 and it was perfect. Still going strong with no problems, only now my Dad uses it. In November2000 I bought a Visor Prism from Best Buy. It was almost perfect and I would still own it had I not dropped it. It was fine after the fall except the power button acted strange so I exchanged it. You just have to love extended warranties. Anyway, my new one has been great as well.

I would try a different supplier if your next one is not what you want. It may be that they got a bad run. You just never know. One thing is for sure, if I am not completely satisfied, I am not keeping the unit.

You raise a good question on whether the Palm, Inc. units have problems. I am going to be very interested to see if the M500 and M505 have any issues on the Message Boards.

Red face Problems

I see some have had lots of problems and some have had none well in my case I had a Prisim that had paint coming off of it so Handspring said they would replace it well it took 9 unit's in exchange to get a working model it has been one big pain in the rump.

Angry

Well I just received my fourth unit and once again the case is cracked, the stylus is loose and the screws look worn. Because I'm outside the US I can't even get a replacement direct from Handspring and I can't be bothered to drive all the way back to the supplier again; in this regard Handspring have been completely useless, every time I complain they give me some US number to call despite it being very clear that I'm not in the US. There is only one supplier here and even if there was another there's no way I'd get my money back from the one that sold me the first one.

I got my VDx in August. The only "problems" I have had with it are cracks around the power button, which are well-documented by users on this site. Up until a month ago it was just one crack on the side and it was no big deal (practically invisible, no effect on performance). Now there are a pair of cracks at the power button on the front of the the unit that look a little more serious. I'm waiting to see what happens. Darn, I may have to upgrade. Other than the thing still works like a charm.

I recently noticed that there's what apppears to be a crack going diagonally from the power button to the screen. This worried me very much, but then I saw the skin for a blue VDX(that's what i have) from handspring for the POSE Emulator and it has the same thing. Maybe it's not a crack afterall.
