Hi,

i'm wondering what people's impressions are of omniremote. it seems like a neat idea to me but i really don't know how realistic it is. currently i have 5 remotes for the stuff in my living room. i'd love to compact them into one.

any thoughts?

thanks,

mc

do you mean the IR attachment part of the omniremote? or the software portion?

There's a demo for the software at palmgear if you want to give it a go
As for the IR module I've heard it's comparable to the functionality of the Pronto once you have it programmed properly (which is a very good product)

Question

I am also interested in this module, but the comments I have heard on various threads make it sound like a spotty performer which is difficult to program properly. Can anyone who is using it comment?

My experience with OmniRemote software

I tried the OmniRemote software and liked it well enough
to register for it. I just use the infrared port on my Visor, which works well enough from the couch (about 8 feet from the TV and VCR); I've haven't done any testing for distance.

The only function that does not work is the TV power on button, but this does not always respond well to the TV remote either, so it's really some kind of problem on the TV side. The TV channel and volume controls, on the other hand, work fine on the OmniRemote.

It's a bit tedious to program the button layout, but once you're done, you're done. The one bug that annoys me is that when you have the keypad rotated 90 degrees on the screen (so that the "top" of the remote is in the direction of the IR port on the side of the Visor) and then change remote keypads (e.g., from TV to VCR), the keypad rotates back so that the IR port is on the side of the keypad layout. Nevertheless, I consider it a cool use of the IR port and am satisfied with it.
