Another question: When you "maximize" a window, does it become integrated into the menubar at the top of the screen, or does it simply sit below it?

When you maximize a window...it doesn't atttach to the menubar...it is free floating...you can drag it to any size you like. Also...there are two other amazing things...

1. The attention to detail is phenominal. Windows have a tiny bit of transparency so you can see the window below.


2. Everything in the OS is rendered at a high resolution. I have included another image...this time of the Dock. The Dock allows you to place any app down there for a quick launch...also...anything launched appears down there. One of the options you can select is to have a magnification tool on...so when you scroll over the dock...it shows the icons in full size.

Also...you can adjust the icons across the entire OS...and make them any size you like...

Yep...one of the default desktop patterns.



Just take a look at how sweet these icons are.

Ooh la la! That is one beautiful interface! I realize that Dreamweaver isn't carbonized yet, but can you post a screenshot of any apps that may give us a inkling of what OSX native apps will look like?

I don't really have many apps yet...other than what it shipped with...but I will show you one very cool thing.

The new OS uses a imaging technology called Quartz from Adobe...so any native app using this technology can display things with great quality. So...right now I have two browsers...IE and Omniweb. Omniweb uses Quartz...so here is a screenshot.

Notice how gorgeous the text looks...everything rendered in the browser...every web page...looks great. Notice...none of the text has that jagged look of html?

Awesome. How is the overall performance? Does it run smoothly, or does it perform sluggish at times?

Also, why don't you start a new thread for displaying a gallery of OS X screenshots. Otherwise I and everyone else will never stop bugging you!

A tiny bit sluggish...as I am use to the rapid response of OS 9...however...I think that may have to do with the amount of RAM I have. I am at the 128MB Minimum...but the delay is really nominal...and I am sure as more apps and features become native...that will work out.

You know...it was shocking to hear Bill Gates call this OS stunning...but I don't know what else you could say...it is true. I can see everyone getting use to this type of UI.

Also...I am interested to see the marriage between this OS...newer hardware...and the Unix core. I am not a Unix user...but I am excited to see what this thing can really do.

I'd like to see this type of UI on a Visor.

All this talk and those pictures are getting me excited. I have been a long time Mac fan for as long as I can remember. The last time I owned a Win machine was with ver. 3.11.! Anyway, my computer is the last of the beige G3 run. Some stats: G3 333 w/ 224MB RAM, DVD ROM, 10X SCSI burner, PCI USB support, a 32MB Graphics card, and on and on. I am currently running OS 9.0.4, and I also use Virtual PC v.4.0, which is Win 2000 with USB support.

My question is this: When I upgrade, will I have PCI support for my USB card and Graphics card? And would I be able to run Virtual PC? I understand it has the classic OS9 feature...but what version of OS9 is it? If it is OS 9.1, my understanding is that 9.1 did not have PCI support. Is this true?

If you have any info for me, please drop me a line here or in my E-mail!

You need to wait and watch for the PCI drivers to be released for your hardware. Also...when it comes to Virtual PC...I don't know. Here is what I did:

I reformatted and partitioned my drive into two sections. I installed OS 9.1 on one and OS X on the other. If I need to go into OS 9 and for some reason what I need won't work in emulation...I just tell OS X to restart under OS 9.1. So...you could keep your Virtual PC on the other partition with OS 9 and it would always work that way.

Interesting...so I could partition, use 9.0.4 in one place, and then have OS X with the OS 9.1 emulation on the other...very very interesting. what is the easiest way to go about partitioning. I have a 12GB HD, and A LOT of free space!

Well you can't partition the drive without destroying the old partition...so you would have to first backup your drive (or you lose everything). After backing up you can reformat/partition using Apple's Drive Setup application which comes with the system software. It is pretty easy...you just select the drive to partition...you select "customize" I believe...then just choose how many partitions you want and what size you want them. I split my drive in half...that way I can keep 9 and X very separate...and organized. You'll find the app in the Utilities folder.


The most important factor is that you MUST install 9 before X. I once did it the other way around (formatting with OS X) and although I was able to install 9 on the drive partition...it wouldn't boot from it.

There is an setting in OS X control panel that allows you to select the startup drive. To go back to 9 just tell it...and restart. Same to go from 9 to X.

Two comments:

1- the poll should really include an "I'd love to upgrade, but my hardware isn't supported" option.

2- It really hurts, seeing those screenshots and knowing I can't switch yet. I use an 8600/300 at home (unsupported by OSX, too old) and a G3/400 at work (I can't switch now, compatibility with old software is too important. I may get to upgrade later this summer as my work moves more and more towards the PC on my desk.)

OS X is amazing, but all the little features of OS 9 just aren't there. the current shipping version is very usable (and extremely stable), but here are some nitpicks:

1. The filesystem is *SLOW*, organizing files is a really big pain in the butt.

2. Hardware support isn't there (yet). I have to boot to 9.1 to burn CDs, stuff like that.

3. Resizing windows is very very slow.

4. Mouse cursor speed is slow at fastest setting, just like with OS 9.1 (I run my 22" monitor at 1600x1200, so I usually use custon drivers, but there are none for OS X yet)

5. When clicking on a window of an app with multiple open windows, only the clicked window comes to front, all other windows in the app are left hidden behind other windows from other open applications.

This OS is just getting started, I am very excited about what is on the horizon.

My BIGGEST pet peeve...is something we have had in Windows forever...

a little icon which closes all windows and goes to the desktop. You can get apps and control panels that do this...but you would think this would be a native tool built into the OS. I had hoped for this with OS X...and still it doesn't exist.

For people who are having speed problems with OS X:

What hardware are you using?

(I'll eventually get to try it on a G3/400 and I'm wondering if it's worth it or if I should just wait until I can afford a new machine later this year)

A G3/400 is fine. My main machine is only a G3/350. The big thing is that you need at least 128 MB of RAM. More is better. If you kick it up to 256 MB OSX will run very well.

Your config would have been a little slow with the Public Beta, but performance increased steadily over the last couple of months and the release is pretty good.

It's nice to finally be able to talk about this beast.

Bought the Beta and...

now I've installed osx on one of my iBooks. Actually, it's being installed because the iBook needed a software "tune up". As a Beta purchaser I was able to get osx at a lower price. God, I love MACs!

I can sympathize as I have an 8500 upgraded to a G3 which will not be OSX compatible. However, I feel that my older computer is entirely useful as is. It can be tweaked here and there and continues to provide excellent service. It's running 8.6 on one of the hardrives and 9.0.4 on another and on the other...I forget I'm grateful that at least one of my iBooks can run OSX (the other may not have enough memory and I enjoy it's 9.1 features quite well.

I expect to get a G4 cube later this summer.

(My office is peecee and nothing about Windows makes me wish to move in that direction.)
