I'm not sure if this is a problem, but in the Hotsync application in my platinum, the factory default profile for hotsyncing is "Direct USB/Serial". When i look into the settings for this profile, the max speed is 57600bps with the "connection method" as "Serial to PC".

USB can do better than this...

So I setup a custom profile, setting up the "connection method" to "USB to PC" and the speed to its max 230400bps.

then in the main hotsync screen, under the hotsync square button theres a pulldown menu for hotsync profile:
(view this with fixed font)

Last Hotsync <date>
using Direct USB/Serial

LOCAL | MODEM
-------
| @ |
| @@@ |
| @ |
-------
\/Direct USB/Serial <----- hotsyncprofile

LOG | HELP

So I changed the hotsync profile to my custom settings which i named "USB"

Last Hotsync <date>
using Direct USB/Serial

LOCAL | MODEM
-------
| @ |
| @@@ |
| @ |
-------
\/Custom USB <----- hotsyncprofile

LOG | HELP

But when I hotsynced, it keeps saying that it is hotsyncing using that factory setting "Direct USB/Serial" rather than my "USB" custom settings. So I get the feeling that i'm not using USB hotsync to its optimal speed (57600 rather than 230400bps)

Is this a bug? or am i doing something wrong?

jkoc,

I don't believe this is a problem - I think it's a limitation of the Palm OS. Based upon my synching of a PalmVx versus a Prism with both settings being limited to 57,600 speed the Prism syncs 3 times faster than the Palm.

Of course on the Palm - USB isn't even an option. There is probably some other hidden control that is not user choosable that allows for the faster connection speed through the USB port.

Grin and bear it - your connected as fast as your going to be, probably.

Possible answer

I did the same thing with my USB settings, and syncing is very fast. But with respect to the Direct USB/Serial config, I noticed that under the last hotsync time it says Direct USB/Serial whenever i press the cradle button. When I tap the screen on the visor to hotsync a custom config named Direct USB to PC (bypassing the button), the last hotsync will say Direct USB to PC. My theory is that the Palm OS, improved by HS, added the Direct USB part and incorporated into the OS so when the button is pressed the choice for serial or USB is automatic. But I don't think it is common knowledge that the user can up the transfer rate for the USB connection like you did. It is real easy to do.

Question

This won't work on a VDx right? Seems like you need OS 3.5

works still

hey, i noticed u only need to press the hotsync button (on the screen) once with the faster USB mode, then subsequent cradle button presses will use that profile.
