Yeah, that bugged me as well. They always made such a deal about it taking days or even weeks to get places in the original series, and that was sometimes at warp 6 or higher. I do remember an interview with Rick Berman where he admitted that they were pretty much going to ignore the old series. Not a new idea, for the 'new' Trek. There was an orignal series ("Omega Glory", I believe) where Kirk stated that Earth had avoided any sort of WWIII nuclear holocust, yet the pilot episode of Next Generation had Q talking about life after the nuclear war.

5) The comm officer is scared of her own shadow. Ridiculous for any space explorer.
And no one in the Navy ever gets seasick? Yes, yes, I know, this is an exploration ship, and they should pick people made of tougher stuff. It's not like space exploration was new to them, though. It seemed that trips inside the solar system were routine, plus the people on the "boomers" (I am guessing long-haul ships at light-speed or just above). Merryweather had been to multiple alien planets. With artificial gravity and a seemingly large galley, not everyone on this ship has to be a grizzled, no-holds-barred explorer. As she was teaching in Brazil, I am guessing that Hoshi was more of a researcher and teacher than a front-line officer. This doesn't excuse the fact that she is completely annoying, and hopefully we'll have a "can't miss" episode where has a brush with death and toughens up a bit.

How the heck would what we saw on "Enterprise" lead to a Prime Directive?
What did Klaang say when he entered the council chamber? "I have disgraced the Empire and am ready to die." Sure, they got the information back, but they also nursed a Klingon warrior back to health instead of letting him die with honor (and after getting his corpse back, they could have still extracted the info from his blood). I am pretty sure that we are going to see some sparks with the Klingons soon.

has anyone ever heard of an "HMS Enterprize?"
Well, I a 5 minute search didn't find anything on HMS Enterprize, but these two:

talk about USS Enterprise, which I have heard of before.

Also the guy in the temporal imager or whatever that was looked and sounded like the Vulcan ambassador to me.
My impression was that he was Romulan. He made a couple of disparaging comments about the Vulcans, so I would think he wasn't one of them. And unless they go one further dissing the original series, there won't be any contact between Human and Romulan, since Kirk & Co. had that dubious honor. We will probably find out they were behind, but won't see them (I am guessing).

but I could have done without the frog-tongue ladies
Did anyone catch in the credits that they were sisters? Can you just hear mom? "Frank, come quick, Diane and Elaine are almost on! I can't believe they are on 'Star Trek'! It's so exciti.......er, what that?"
I liked the show, and think it will be a good series. As a fan from the old days, I think this is the "Trekiest" series so far. I watched TNG for a few seasons, a few episodes of DS9, and Voyager for a bit, but I really like this one. I suppose we'll just have to see. I wish there would have been more pomp and circumstance around the launch, though. You know, some shots of people watching from Times Square, Moscow, Bejing, that type of thing, all cheering on the crew.
