Okay, so what are the chances that on July 1st, Handspring will actually start charging people $399 again for the Edge?
I'm thinking that the price will simply drop to $299, with or without an old Visor serial # or other handheld.
The ending date is just a way to get people to buy now instead of later, right? A brilliant move, but a marketing ploy, for sure.
A lot of people are surmising that perhaps soon, Handspring will release a color Edge, possibly at the price of $399. They wouldn't tell us that now, of course, because they're not dumb enough to make the same mistake Palm just made with the M505. If this is the case, the Edge would have to stay at $299.
Either way, I'm starting to think that the new Edge price, coupled with the Visor Phone deal (which I'm sure will stay permanent, too) are going to finally get me to part with my Deluxe. I just can't help the urge to wait until July 2nd, just to see what Handspring has up its sleeve. I probably wouldn't go for a color Edge (even though I would want to) because the price is bound to be at least $400. That's a little steep for a handheld (at least for my purposes). But who knows? Maybe it will be more than just a color version of what's there now. Maybe I'll let my temptation get the better of me.
Whatever they do, I hope the price of any new unit won't be above the $450 mark. You're getting close to PocketPC territory there, and at this point price is still the main reason why people buy Palms instead of iPaqs, no matter what they tell you about simplicity.
I'm a Mac user and a world reknowned Microsoft hater/ basher. But even I'm not going to try to kid myself about the Pocket PC being technologically superior.
Ask yourself this: if you could get a Pocket PC (with all the features of the best PocketPCs out there) for $300, would you even THINK about getting an Edge, an M505, or a Prism?
