Hi. I'm leaning pretty heavily toward the VDX after reading so much about display problems on the Platinums. As far as I can determine, display flicker and streaking is a big Platinum problem when viewing images on the device.

My questions:

1. are newly shipped Platinums exhibiting this behavior?

2. Is this a major concern?

3. Is display flicker/streaking an issue when using basic apps like DateBk4 and Noah dictionary?

I'd like to buy a Platinum for the speed increase, but I won't if it gives me headaches with the screen flicker.

Hmm, are you sure you're not thinking of the Prism? That's the only Visor I've read of anyone having a flicker problem with... and there are numerous posts about how to deal with that

I've got a Platinum built in December. No evidence of any screen problems here. Heck, I haven't even been able to get the paint to rub off!

Get a Platinum. You'll appreciate the extra speed AND 16 shades of gray. Pictures are worthless on the deluxe or lower models with 4 shades.

Arrow What Problems?

I am not aware of any problems with the Platinum other than the few people that complain about the paint rubbing off.

I have experienced the streaking, shadowing and/or flickering on every platinum I have tried out (5 total including replacements and co-workers units) just try using Chrome 1.1 with Grey scale mode enabled or view a 16 shade grey image using fire pad (verified by Firepad support).

On the Visor village board there is about a dozen posters who have experienced the same thing and with multiple replacements sent from handspring. I would love to see a display that was good . . .

With that said, the problems are annoying when viewing images and an overall disapointment in the product but the Platinum is still the fastest Palm PDA out there, the "visual" effects do not effect performance (other than the obvious). If you run the Application launcher in 4 grey mode (which is default) you wont ever notice the problem in 99% of the applications including the ones you mentioned.

So I guess you should buy it :-), I'm not going to return mine!

How do you run the app launcher in 16-shade mode? Just curious.

For some reason the Palm OS does not come with a toggle to go into Grey Scale mode even when the hardware or OS supports it, it depends on software to initate it.

There are several Hacks/programs" which do this, one is "GreyToggle". Also Chrome 1.1 beta has the ability to switch your display mode to 16 shades of grey. Both of these will leave the system in this mode for the application launcher dialog boxes etc. I think it makes the display look better and is generally easier to read (except maybe in lot light), but on a platimun you may experience the Streaking and Shadowing in some views/combinations of greys

Arrow Greyscale

Do the above mentioned programs work with the VDX?

I can try Khroma (free version of Chrome) on my VDX. Can someone give me some way I can test if it's being displayed in 4-bit (16 greys)?

Silverscreen displays in 16 greys on my VDx and it has an additional greyscale setter that helps adjust the streaking problem.

Nevermind. Khroma needs OS 3.5 or higher.

The software says the Khroma only works on OS 3.5 but the website right here has the VDX and Vsolo listed in it's compatability list. What's the deal?
