I noticed the VisorPhone is now in my area through VoiceStream. I have the Prism and the Minstrel S. Now I'm hung up on whether to get the VisorPhone or a Nokia 8290. My wife is in a similar situation. She has a Blue Deluxe and needs to replace her cell too. She's leaning towards the 8290 though.

I pondered the convenience of having the visorphone there with all of my contacts in it and the ability to do better quality SMS than a crummy phone display. I also thought that a hard crash of my visor could totally hose my day and I'd be potentially out of luck with the VisorPhone if I needed a contact other than calling home (read: Towing Service).

With the Nokia, I'm aware of the IRDA features and would be tempted to just get it and a basic plan. If I roam out of my range of the Minstrel S and still want data services for my Visor, I can do it by IRDA and burn up talktime minutes. This way I don't have to pay for data service twice (VoiceStream / YadaYada).

This is a tough decision and I'm wondering if I have all my facts straight and whether I should attach a $300 modem to a $450 PDA? With the visorPhone, The fact that my PDA is ALWAYS with me means the likelyhood of me being stuck without a phone will be reduced. Everytime I forget my phone at home, something terrible happens to me or my car.

Please, whatever you do, don't buy a Nokia phone. They are pure crap for the most part. Almost everyone I know that has a Nokia phone has problems.

If you want a good GSM phone, get the Motorola P7389. It's a Tri-band world phone and it costs about $30 more than the Nokia 8290. I have one. It's great. Doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that Nokia puts into their phones, but it is a much more reliable.

It can do IrDA stuff as well.

I've had Voicestream (well, they were originally Omnipoint) for nearly 5 years now. The P7389 is my third Motorola (only brand I use) phone. Never a problem with any of them.

Try it. You won't be disappointed.

Why are you asking yourself this? If something terrible happens, then your visor will probably crash! Hehehe, i would just get the Nokia, they are so small and you can change it's color. I don't think you'd look to smart talking to your visor all the time too...(btw you should be able to beam your contacts to your nokia (or any other IR phone) so it's not a total loss)

VisorPhone

The VisorPhone with the Prism is the most incredible device on the market! Use it in the leather case with a retractable headset and you will look 'cooler' than the secret service. The integration you get when it does caller ID against your addressbook is fantastic. There is no better phone to do SMS with - not to mention the ability to surf websites, etc.

Yes, it is big. If you are going to carry your Visor with you anyway, it is the smallest way to get the combo and adds more functionallity than anything else in its class.

Just a word in defense of Nokia - I've been using Nokia phones for a year (currently using the 8260 and love it) and the ONLY problem I've had was my own fault. In my experience Nokia products have proven to be of excellent quality.
