Free - Palm III & Modem

My boss gave me a Palm III (with a damaged digitizer) including a U.S. Robotics modem and cradle. I would like to use it primarily to send and recieve e-mail, I already use a Visor Deluxe as my main PDA.
Of course I will be replacing the digitizer, but:
1. Is there an easy way of identifying the modem model?
2. Any reason I can't delete the datebook, games, memo pad, expense, to do, etc. to make more room?

You can delete the data in the datebook, memo pad, & expense, but the programs are built-in and can not be deleted.
