I'm having a tough time trying to get my Vd reset. I'm overseas so I picked up a Backup Module and never having to do a hard reset I wasn't expecting to use it. Well, Murphy's law kicked in the first day I was here and I received a fatal error that I could not clear with a soft or warm reset. So, I went ahead and did a hard reset. I then backed my visor up and it worked until I tried to go "home" by tapping the home icon. I've reset a number of times and backed it up but I always have the same problem. I can use my visor only by resetting and then going to preferences - buttons - and then changing the buttons to the program I want to use. Every time I try to go home however, it crashes. Any suggestions out there? Thanks...

Any suggestions out there... I've tried everything and can't get the fatal error to clear. My last try is going to be a batteries out hard reset. I need some help b/c I can't make the call overseas to Handspring just to get put on hold or told to bring it back to the store!! Thanks....

I had a similar problem using Launcher III as my home. Here's what worked for me:

1. In Launcher III (or similar program), uncheck the "Always use..." (under options, preferences)
2. Hit the home button to return to PalmOS navigator
3. Insert backup module
4. Run backup
5. Press home button.
6. Turn off and take out module.

However, you may be running into trouble, because once the module restors the data (and launcher program), it resets the preferences. If that's the case, I'm not sure I can help.

Have you tried the Visor "home" button after you did a hard reset, BUT before you do the restore from the module? If you try that and it still fails, then you have a bad image in the ROM. Unfortunately, this can only be fixed (that I'm aware of) by returning the unit to Handspring. If it works after the hard reset, but doesn't work after the restore, then you've got a bad backup image in the module.

Agreed. Sounds very likely a 3rd party app launcher is making this happen. I use 'Launch 'Em' w/no problems.

I'm pretty sure that before I restore all of the data that the error does not occur, so there must be a bad image in the module. Any hope with that?

Also, I am running Launder III, so I'm going to give the other suggestion a try. Thanks so much!!

Well, I'm almost certain it's Luancher III killing my Visor. My problem now is that I can't get into the program to either delete it or turn it off. I can't get to home b/c home is Launcher and it crashes as soon as I try to open it. Is there another way to get to the program to delete it or to uncheck the "always use" button? I can get to the preferences menu after I reset and can change the button configuration to open any program BUT Launcher...the fatal error occurs as soon as I press whatever button I assigned it to. Any suggestions?

What version of Launcher III are you using? I have 1.5.2, and it works fine. You might try Hotsyncing that version into your Visor (unless you already have it).

From the Launcher III 1.5.2 Readme:

IMPORTANT: If you are already using LauncherIII 1.42 or older, please uncheck
"Always use LauncherIII" preferences option, before installing this version!

IMPORTANT: BE SURE THAT YOU REMEMBER THE PASSWORD BEFORE USING THE 'Lock' GADGET!

IMPORTANT (for OS 3.x users): If you delete LauncherIII 1.5.x without deactivating
it first, you will not have access to the default Palm application launcher
(you'll get the old OS 1.x and 2.x launcher). To correct that, install
Launcher III 1.5.x again, go to its prefernces, check and then uncheck
"Always use LauncherIII" checkbox. After that, you can freely delete
LauncherIII"

Hmmm... Looks like you could hotsync 1.5.2 over any version newer than 1.4.2 without having to uncheck "always use" and it would overwrite.

Have you tried doing a warm-reset (holding the up-arrow key when you press the reset button, and continue holding until the preference application appears) and then setting one of the hard buttons to Launcher III and then running it to turn it's preference on or off?

Finally worked it out. I went to preferences then to applications and deleted Launcher from there. It does set up the old OS launcher if you dont first deactivate the program. Thanks for all of the help = this is a great resource...

I had a similar problem when I loaded some software that was corrupted. The problem was that the 'home' screen after a reset tries to display 'All' and the bad progam would crash the Visor when ever it was displayed (not even run). So it would crash on 'All' or 'Unfiled' (I'm not using a 3rd party launcher).
The problem is that installs are done first in a hotsync, so I had installed an app that would crash the visor, then backed it up with Backup Buddy...!! The only way for me to fix it was to go to the daily backup of my work PC from the day before I installed the bad software, restore the Backup Buddy directory from there and then hard reset and restore the Visor..!!!
Moral of the story - always have a backup of your backup
