Just a thought ---

I think the reason that Handspring will not make a device with 16MB of memory is because it may make the memory expansion module obsolete.

As far as I know the dragonball processor can use a maximum of 16MB of memory. If they sell a device with 16MB of on board memory then the memory expansion springboard would not be able to work as regular memory. It would have to work similar to CF cards.

If this is true...

Why would Handspring make a handheld with 16MB of memory and lose the profits from selling the 8MB expansion module (probably one of the most popular Springboards)?

I sure wouldn't.

Tell me what you think.

I do not think this is true based on Tony Rudenko's upgrade FAQ:

But you may have a point. Maybe HS promised Hagiwara that it would refrain from making a 16mb Visor if they agreed to make the module. Hell, I would still probably buy both. Besides this unlikely scenario, I have NO IDEA why HS did not up the memory to 16mb or at least offer this as an option on the Edge.

I doubt any sort of deal with Hagiwara & 16mb Visors work fine with Springboard memory modules. I think they're just waiting for the right price point, 16mb of memory would bring the price up about $100 and a lot of people still think you don't need that much memory.

I don't think it would cost $100 more for an extra 8 MB of memory. If this was the case, 64MB iPaq would cost $800 for just the RAM.(but I'm sure the PPC memory IS different). Handspring would have to make a 16 MB backup module if they had a 16 MB visor, right? But I don't think that's what's stopping them from making a 16 MB visor, because a new backup module would bring in more cash to Handspring. Maybe they think we don't need that much memory? That's really bizarre... Maybe Handspring is just getting greedy(smart?), and wants to charge extra for the "design" of their new Edge, while still keeping manufacturing costs down... The Visor Edge probably costs them about the same amount of money as the Platinum: so they have devised a way of turning over more profit, with less features. I think the thing they're banking on is that "non-techie consumers" will fall in love with the Edge's form/design. Like me and cars: I don't care one bit what kind of engine, shocks, brakes, or *whatever* I have, as long as it looks cool, and gets me to where I'm going. The truth is, the handheld market is reaching into the lives of all sorts of consumers, and will most of them care if the product has 8 MB or 16 MB? Do they know how many memos that is? Probably not. Basically, "Looks sell" and that's what handspring is betting on here. What, you don't think it looks sleek?!?
