Question Intelligent AvantGo Content?

Hey-

I'm looking for halfway intelligent AvantGo channels and reading. Salon.com has started to cut back their content and can't give me the full version on my Visor if I buy a subscription. I can only read so much news and updates and such. Anybody know of any sites with well-thought out content (of any leaning), I'm talking about regularly updates stuff that isn't straight news.

anyone?

Xzaver, if you've got something interesting to say on this subject, why not share it with the group? I'm interested in dietrichbohn's question as I'm sure are other's.

Not content with content

I love Avantgo, but man its been a long time since they added any new, compelling content channels. The channel that downloaded my bank balance went belly-up over the summer (it only ran a couple of months as it was). Since then I haven't seen a single Avantgo channel that made me think "hey, this is cool".

Maybe they are focussing on wireless content development. Maybe they are running out of capital. Maybe they are running out of ideas.

I think it is a mistake for them to focus too much on wireless, as its hard to beat the shear volume of content that can be crammed into a PDA with a broadband connection during a synch operation (or over a dial-up for that matter). I hate the notion of getting only headlines and having to wait, wait, wait for a wireless connection to access underlying content. I'll take bulk over speed most days.

I agree. I just want something intelligent that can hold my attention over 20 minutes. I've got ebooks (thank the lord that copyright only lasts so long), but sometimes the hard literature I'm reading for school is the kind of thing I need to be making notes with--not just reading on the bus. Salon.com was perfect: current content on a range of topics, well written and deep. arg.

I agree with Keefer on this one .. being able to do a bulk download suits me perfectly. I usually read the sites when I'm travelling ... cars or either side of a plane journey (Changi airport here in Singapore has free IR broadband). Mind you I tend to read online newspapers mainly .. don't really grab much other content .. haven't found a sports site I like yet.

Would like to see AvantGo broaden their international content though ..

Exclamation

I'd have to say Fark is the best channel. Although some of the things are not safe for school, which probably means nothing to you. Only complaint is its fairly large in size.

My fav 2 channels are:

space.com
beyond2000 (they don't update everyday but good content)

I've also got CNN, KATU, useless knowedge, and a couple others I only read if I really need something to read.

But the first point of this thread is absolutly correct. Not much new...

I've always liked BusinessThinkers Trends Digest and Wired News.

I'll take a look at businessthinkers, thanks.. I've got Wired, it's good for brief stints...

...I'm thinking I'm just going to have to start hunting down ebooks again. I'm pretty ticked.. I had a CD called "library of the future" that was not so futuristic--but it did have .txt files for abou 200 classic texts--from Sir Gawain & the Green Knight right on up through Ulysses. A great CD that has found its way into the same place my extra socks are.

you can find a lot of those classic books for free at www.memoware.com

maybe not EVERYTHING you're looking for, but quite a few.

Book Warez

ckrupsha, VisorCentral will not and does not tolerate links to any illegal material. This recently (less than a week ago) has had much discussion about, with the end agreement that while it maybe not be right, it is illegal. Please review your Terms of Service with us, and the agreement you clicked-through to when registering on our site.

For FREE legal ebooks check out www.memoware.com, or the gutenburg project (has like every non copyrighted book) (www.ibiblio.org). For up to date ebooks, you can purchase them from retailers such as Amazon.com, or Peanut Press, and many others.

I've always been partial to the Onion as a channel. Best news parody on the web or in print.
