USB Power Option in Win98

Anyone have more details on this as described in this section? I am having intermittent sync problems. I checked out the properties tabs for USB drivers in Win98 and found no option to keep Windows from axing power to the USB port

Help!

Cool

There is always a cable power and ground for USB devices. There is no software control to turn the power off.

Windows 98 USB drivers only detect when devices are plugged and unplugged.

Too many devices may strain the power, but the drivers are supposed to put up a warning. This can happen when laptops are running on battery power.

I think what he is looking for is the OS Power Management for USB Devices.

In XP, you can go into Device Manager and then Right Click on each USB Root Hub. Choose Properties | Power Management and toggle the following:

Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power.

I seem to recall this being necessary for some people in order to get certain USB devices to work properly.

I also seem to recall WIN98SE had the exact same option. Try following the instructions above and see if that gets you there.

Keep in mind, it is not the device configuration that has it, but the USB Root Hub.

WIN98 doesn't have this option. I looked on my son's laptop.

Some USB ports will only support one device powerwise unless the PC supports a USB hub. If it doesn't, then one must purchase a USB hub. I did this for my son's laptop. Used a D-Link which has it's own external power.

Win98 CD-ROM has a diagnostic USB viewer under \tools\reskit\diagnose\usbview.exe.

Also, earlier versions of the Intel 82371ISB PCI to USB universal host controller chipset are known to cause problems. Check:

1. Right click My Computer and click properties. Click the Device Manager Tab

2. Double-click USB Controller

3. Double-click Intel ISB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller, and then click the General Tab

4. If the hardware version states that the USB controller is 000, then you definitely have the early version of the USB chipset. Problems have also been reported with version 001.

If this is the case, you need to update the motherboard. Another option is use a PCI card that has USB ports.

Check out http://www.usb.org for USB information.
