Well, What Can I Say, Glass Breaks when it hits the ground. I bought a Visor at CompUSA (I usually hate buying things there, but hey had a good price) back on 7/3/2000. I had loaded everything I wanted and I was doing good. Yesterday (7/8/2000), I was getting out of my Truck with my Visor in my hand and it slipped out. Mine had the protective plastic case on the front, but in any case it hit the ground. The battery cover, springboard cover, and the front cover flew off in all directions leaving my Visor face down. Before picking everything up I though to myself it should be OK because my friend demonstrated how durable his was by intentionally dropping it. The glass in the display is cracked in many pieces, the screen itself works but the touch screen is not functional. I'm 6'5" so it probably dropped 4.5' to 5' to the ground. Needless to say I went back to CompUSA to see if there was anything they would do for me. They asked me I had bought into there little warranty program where the product would be replaced no matter what happened to it. I responded no, because I never buy those things, I figure they were a waste of money. So I paid handspring 85 bux to send me out a refurb unit. I think I might placey a little hockey game with my old visor until the refurb gets here.

Damn that sucks man. Makes you think next time you buy something maybe you should get the warranty. I never buy 'em either, but when YOU break it, the money, time, and hassle of sending something in for repair/exchanging for a refurb is worth paying the 30 bucks. I think I might go up to CompUSA and get it for my Visor if they allow that...

I feel your pain, brother...
Peace

BUY A CASE!

The same thing happened to me. Without a doubt, a case would have prevented my little accident. $30 for a good case...well worth it!

I bought my Visor from CompUSA without the extended warranty in the Buffalo area and dropped it the same night. I called them up the following day and explained it was a 2 hour drive from Toronto/ON/Canada and they told me if I bought the warranty after the fact, they'd gladly replace my unit.

I was quite happy with this that I also bought the warranty for my fiance's unit while I was down there.

Lesson I learned.... it pays to pick up these kinda warranties.

Cheers

I have had my Visor for 3-4 months and love it, except today. I opened the case today and see the cracked screen!

I thought no problem as earlier posts said the first LCD is free replacement...not now as it is $85 I have been careful til now using screen protectors to minimize scratches and the like.

Customer service was polite but very firm with their Take it or leave it attitude on the $85 charge.

Not too happy at the moment

Question

This must lead to the question which is heard over and over again, exactly how fragile is the Visor [Dx]?

I've had a friend that slammed his Palm III into the door twice (before he realised what was stopping it closing) and for some strange reason was fine, how often will simply dropping a Visor do this kind of damage, and what do those who just find their's cracked one day think could have happened to them for that to happen?

Sure, I've read comments on other forums, some which say the Visor is incredibly fragile, your own board which the FAQ states it's pretty much the same, and a friend who says it's more robust than a similar Palm (as well as the odd miracle story on here). Trying however to pull them together to one rounded and objective opinion though is difficult.

My Visor Screen cracked when I was writing on it with the stylus. Unfortunately Handspring won't do anything about it unless you cough up $85 for the replacement of the screen. I am using a friends palm 5x and the glass seems a lot thicker than the visor. After this I may switch.

My Visor dropped at least 4-5ft out of my locker at the gym the other day. I was getting dressed when I accidently knock it off of the locker shelf. It hit the concrete/tile floor pretty hard. I thought for sure it was a goner. I picked it up and everything was just fine. I think what saved it was the Visor Case that I purchased just 3 days before. I got one of the cheaper ($25) single fold velcro strap models. When I purchased the case, I thought $25 was a lot to pay for this little case BUT now I'm glad I had it.

Viva Visor!

From my understanding you have a limited time after purchase, usually 30 days or maybe 15, to buy a warranty on something. You dont HAVE to buy it at the same time you get the item. Ask CompUSA if you can still get it and get it. It may then be covered or not but at least for next time you will have it.

Cool

I purchased my VDX from CompuUSA, a place that I almost never buy anything.

I got the replacement waranty only because the sales dude said that if I did, along with waranty coverage, they also as a separate issue (not broken) exchange the unit for different unit giving full purchase price credit for what I had paid.

As a possible hedge against a color VDX coming out within a year (not too likely but for $19 I would be worth it), I purchased the "waranty".

When I got home, I realized I had nothing in writing that stated what the sales dude had said. I went back to the store a couple days later and one of the managers, said it was a local store policy, an wrote it down in writting so I knew it would be covered.

I don't know if this was just a one store thing or a store by store deal. For me, $19 for replacement/exchange for a year is worth it.

I think the damge depends on the orientation that teh Visor falls. I dropped my visor serveral feet before on a mettalic surface and nothing happened to it. Then again I had it in a Rhodiana case.

I can't imagine the screen breaking just writing on it. I find that very hard to believe. You would have to out substantial pressure in the screen for it to break.

As to the screen breaking from writing, it probably already had a crack that was invisible.

I dropped mine yesterday. Trying to put it into the slip case. It fell 6 feet and landed flat, face down on concrete. When I picked it up it was resetting itself. So far, so good!

I've dropped this thing a few other times, too. Yesterday was the most dramatic, though.

I dropped my Pilot 1000 a few times, too. Never a crack/break.

My friend has a Palm V. Dropped it three feet as he got into his car, onto asphault. Broken screen!

Talking

I also bought the extended warranty from CompUSA. (I prefer Best Buy but they didn't have any Blue VDx's in stock when I bought mine.) I mainly bought it because I was very, very scared of breaking the screen. $20 is a lot better then paying $85 to Handspring.

Google is a happy camper now!
I broke the glass (vs broken LCD panel) on my Vdx as noted above, and did not want to cough up $85. I called Staples where I bought it 4 months ago & they allowed me to buy a 2yr warranty for $44.99 and swapped out my broken Black Vdx for a new Blue one (now matches my blue\silver Cameleon stylus).

I do know how you guys feel. I dropped mine about 2 months after I got it. It was in the leather belt case from Palm, but did not protect it one bit. Called Handspring and got a refurb for 85 big ones. Although the refurb works fine the casing feels loose, not as solid as the original one. From now on it stays in a case!
