PCAnywhere Question???

I am trying to setup PCAnywhere so I can access my Father-In-Law's computer. We are both on cable inernet so the connection will be TCP/IP.

Both systems are loaded with the application and I think I have setup all the parameters correctly but when I launch PCAnywhere from my system (his computer is launched to Host waiting for remote), my system does not find his.

I found his IP address by going to www.whatismyip.com and I believe this is just an external IP address and this is why I am not finding his system directly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ATT was no help at all as tech support said "we do not support remote access, sorry". I don't think she quite understood my situation.

I typed in "ipconfig" in the run line and i got a DOS window that flashed for likw 1/10 of a second and then disappeared. If there was an IP address, I didn't see it.

I have ATT cable internet as well in Michigan (so I should be on the same set up as you) and have no problems getting it to work.

If you tell me what your hardware setup is I can help. The biggest problem you will run into is if you have a router connected to your cable modem and I can give you some pointers on how to get it to work.

For my set up, I have a Motola SurfBoard Modem, with a Linksys router connected to it. The Linksys is set up to "port trigger" the port for the incoming pcAnywhere to the IP address of the computer that is the host. To do this you have to have a fixed internal IP address for your network computers.

If you just have a cable modem and an external "internet" ip address associated with your host, ATT may have disabled incoming ports to your host.

Another thing is if you have any firewall software (Zone alarm or Norton, internet security) you have to set a rule that allows your remote IP address to connect to the ports pcAnywhere uses.

To get the ports that pcAnywhere uses I believe it is listed inthe help file and is user configurable.

you need to type 'winipcfg.'

ToolkiT, close, but no cigar. 'ipconfig' works from a dos prompt, but doesn't tell you as much and doesn't have the 'release' and 'renew' options.

Maddog,

If you are both using WinXp, you can use remote desktop tha is included with xp.

Are either of you using a router between your broband and pc?

If you are using Win95, 98 and I believe ME, the comand is winipcfg. NT, 200 and XP is ipconfig from the a DOS window.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

will do the trick.

ipconfig /all gets you more info.

Indeed I was talking about NT/2K/XP...

Sorry for you win9x users, I'm so used by the NT kernel now that I tend to forget about the win9x users out there...

My apologies. Haven't played with NT kernel machines much and assumed those commands were the same as dos kernel OS's.
