Question about GPS

i have what is perhaps a stupid question about gps.

i'm in canada (toronto). my question is: if i get a gps (magellan or handy), do i have to subscribe to a service to use it? what if i buy the mapopolis toronto map and then plug in the gps? is that all i need to do or do i have to pay a monthly fee to someone?

Nope, it's free. The Gov't put it up and as long as they maintain it, it'll be there.
