I am trying to send (and perhaps receive?) email through my compuserve account during hotsync. I refuse to use outlook, so I am looking for some assistance in what software to get on the pc and the Visor to accomplish this. At this point, sending is more important than receiving, and if it is easier to do it through a pop3 account, I can do that as well.

Well...

Keep in mind that the software that's provided by Handspring/Palm allow mail synchronization between the desktop mail client and your Visor's mail application.

If you already have POP3 capabilities, then from your question, the key is to have a desktop mail client that is compatible with the mail conduit that's installed and supports POP3. If you're a CompuServe 2000 user, then your sending option is most likely limited to POP3 (it's a bit of a bear to send through a CIS account).

If you're on Windows, if you don't want to use Outlook (and I'm also presuming Outlook Express), your other no-cost options are:

- Netscape Navigator/Communicator
- Eudora
- Or other MAPI/VIM compatible client

I'd recommend Eudora in this scenario. If you already have Netscape, that's OK, too. Just configure your POP3 mail client to use a profile that contains your CIS Internet Address and use that profile to mail sync with your Visor.

That way, when you compose a new E-Mail on your Visor and "send it", it gets placed into the mail app's Outbox--- which gets transferred to the Outbox of your POP3 mail client... and gets sent out to your mail server when you either fire up the desktop mail client or manually connect to the mail server on the desktop.

Just curious

Any particular reason you dont want to use Outlook?

Well, other than I hate Microsoft, don't trust Bill Gates, use Windows reluctantly, and feel Outlook transmits more viruses than a third-world whorehouse, I don't have anything against it.

If I could figure out how to do it on my Amiga, I would do it there.

Yeah, don't sugar-coat it, share your true feelings...

I use Eudora for mail on my laptop (that I happen to sync my Visor with). Works like a charm. I have my Visor set to download Unread messages only, and I compose mail all the time on my Visor, and it gets sent off during syncing.

The only caveat I have found (and this goes for any e-mail program, Eudora and Outlook included): keep your Inbox relatively clean. I ended up with several hundred read messages in my Inbox, and was getting a little frustrated because it was taking 10 minutes to HotSync on my speedy USB connection. A friend of mine just got his Visor and had over 1300 messages in his, and he was up over 20 minutes on his first Hotsync. I thought it might be a problem, so I created a new folder and moved everything there, leaving my Inbox virtually empty (of course it's virtually empty, it's e-mail! Jeez, I crack myself up...), and my sync times dropped down to seconds instead of minutes.

Well, i solved the problem. It turns out that I was using the old version of Compuserve's mail, and I had to migrate my mailbox to the New mail system. Also, I found out that the smtp server needs to be set to the one for the system you are connecting through, not necessarily the one for the mail service. Once done, I was syncing email like a pro.

I still can't get Eudora to get mail on startup so that the new mail will get sent to the visor. Gotta work on that.
