Epitaph for the Visor
Briefly and distinctly...
As a Visor Deluxe owner of almost 2 years, I have to say that it has been, and is, a great little PDA. It does everything I initially wanted it to do, and then expanded to do many things I never thought it could do. (Keep Word documents and Access relational databases in store, act as a thesaurus, encrypt sensitive data...)
And HandSpring's most frequently-stated advantage over other Palm PDAs -- the SpringBoard slot -- provided me with the sort of expansion the creators had claimed it would. I was able to add a CF card reader, and along with Kopsis' excellent VFSHelper software & Launcher III, was able to expand beyond my 8MB of memory seamlessly and efficiently. And the Stowaway keyboard turned it into the most portable -- and comfortable -- data entry device I've ever used.
So, HandSpring has nothing to be ashamed of; they did a great job on the Visors. The only reason I'll be trading my VDX in for a Clie T615C within in a month is my problem, not HandSpring's -- my eyes are aging, and that hi-res screen of Sony's is going from attractive to a necessity.
If it wasn't for that... heck, I could use my Visor Deluxe for quite some time. In fact, my Visors (and Visors everywhere) will live on for years -- I plan to give it away to a friend or family member.
So let me sign off saying this: the Visor isn't dead yet -- it's just sterile.
