All the major modem manufacturers are starting to ship 56k V.92 modems. These modems feature quick connect, call on hold, and V.44 compression for faster throughput. Has anyone heard of development plans for a V.92 springboard modem? I have heard that v.44 compression at 53k download speed is the equivalent of 70k data throughput. Uploads are sped up too. Anybody heard any rumors from Handspring, Xircom or Card Access (ThinModem)?

Most people find that the 33k speeds that the Handspring modem uses is more than adiqiate for most handheld uses, so I doubth that v92. modems would be neccassary

V.92 and Thinmodem

Well, I asked CardAccess whether they had any plans. Here is their response:

"While we are aware of the modem V.92 code, we do not currently have plans to implement the V.92 modem code on our Thinmodem or ThinmodemPlus products.

Other than the shorter time to connect, I really do not see a benefit of V.92 over V.90 for a Visor user connecting to an ISP. It would be of great benefit for my desktop with faster upload and call on hold!

Don't forget V.44 compression. Being forced to use analog dial up for my mobile device, I want all the data throughput I can get! Forget quick connect and call on hold. Give me throughput! V.44 compression means more data our and more data in. Of course the big issue that hasn't been mentioned is which ISP's will support V.92 and when?

Just like viewing a website on a PC I don't think the increase in bandwidth would help all that much in loading & rendering normal websites. Its most likely of benefit to file downloads & stuff, something we don't do much on a Handheld (ANd even then the files are oh so tiny)
