Hi! Forgive my ignorance but I am trying to figure out how to set up my email through Microsoft Outlook so that when I hot-sync, I get the emails on my Handspring. I currently collect my email through Yahoo! (which also collects email for me through Eudora) and now I need to conduit it all through Outlook. I set "custom" to collect my Outlook mail but for some reason, it is not putting the emails onto my Handspring when I sync. Any suggestions or good webpages that will go step by step through the process of setting u the email?? Thanks.

Remember that with the software supplied by Handspring that you can only sync with one desktop E-Mail application.

In other words: If you're using both Eudora and Outlook, you can only have one of them sync their Inbox with the built-in Mail app.

It wasn't entirely clear in your message if you wanted to switch to Outlook or use both Eudora and Outlook. I'll take a leap of faith that you have a need to sync E-Mail with Outlook and you no longer have a need to sync E-Mail with Eudora (if you do, then I'll address that later).

Since you already configured your HotSync Manager to sync with Eudora, the Palm Desktop/HS Manager installation should have also installed the "Mail Setup" application in the Palm Desktop folder (the program is also known as EMailWiz.exe, typically located in the C:\Palm directory).

If that's the case, all you need to do is run that program again and re-select "Microsoft Outlook". You may see other options like "Outlook Express", "Exchange" or "MAPI". Just chose "Microsoft Outlook" (I'm also presuming you're using Outlook 97, 98 or 2000 and not Outlook Express-- some folks confuse that...of course, Microsoft didn't do us any favors by using very similar names :-).

For best results, I'd turn off the HotSync Manager before running the Mail Setup program. But that's me. After you've completed Mail Setup, fire back up the HotSync Manager and try a test mail sync. Note: If you have messages in the Visor Mail app, they may be deleted after you've sync'ed with Outlook or they may appear in Outlook. Fair warning. Make backups if you're paranoid.

But!

Let's say you said, "Ooops, my bad... I forgot to tell you I already did all of that but I'm still not getting mail that's in my Outlook inbox..."

No problem. If you've done all of that and you're not getting mail down to your Visor, check your built-in Mail options (tap on the menu, then Options-HotSync Options). Make sure the "Settings for:" is showing "Local HotSync" and then look at the 4 options below that. I'm guessing it may be set to something other than "All". If it is not set to "All", make it so (tm - Jean Luc Picard)

But!

What if you really meant:

"PZ, I need to sync mail with both Eudora and Outlook..."

Sorry, bubba. No can do with just the built-in Mail app on your Visor and the Handspring supplied, Palm-designed mail conduit.

You'd need something like Actual Software's MultiMail Conduit to allow you to sync to multiple desktop E-Mail clients (last time I looked at it, it could do Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, cc:Mail). And you would also need something like their MultiMail PRO replacement mail app (which supports multiple mailboxes-- combined with the MultiMail Conduit, each sync with each of the desktop E-Mail programs will put the messages in separate MultiMail PRO mailboxes. i.e. A mail sync with Outlook will sync with local mailbox 1, a mail sync with Eudora will sync with local mailbox 2, etc.).

I'm not sure of there are other replacement conduits/mail apps that can do that (I seem to recall the Eudora Internet Suite may do that as well--- but not the freebie versions; you have to pony up the cash for the conduits. Better check-- I think the Palm Eudora app doesn't support multiple accounts).

Thanks a lot for the thorough reply. I guess I wasn't very clear in my original message. I have my desktop software set to receive my 2 existing email accounts (Yahoo! and Eudora) through Microsoft Outlook 2000 (in other words, both sources come to Outlook) and I have had my Mail options set up on my Handspring like you mentioned in your email. I still am having trouble collecting the emails during the hot syncs though.

I forgot to do this:
In hotsync manager click custom.
Make sure the "Mail" conduit reads "Syncronize the files" and not "do nothing". Also check the "set as default" box.
You probably already did this.

mark's suggestion is probably it...

But if it isn't...

The mail conduit can only sync from the Outlook 2000 inbox (from your personal folders or from the Exchange server-- not both).

If you have both POP3 connections to your Y!Mail and Eudora accounts downloading messages to a folder other than the Inbox, or downloading it to your server's inbox instead of your local inbox (or visa versa) and the mail conduit is looking in the other place, then I can see how the messages won't get sync'ed down to your Visor.

If the POP3 messages are appearing just fine in O2K, let us know how you've configured the accounts to get the messages down and into what folder. Also, if you're using rules that act on those folders and messages, let us know what they are. Hope that helps.
