Lightbulb

I have designed a flip cover for the Visor that works like a Palm III flip cover, but retains the 'virtues' of Handspring's current clip on cover. I tried to see if Handspring was interested, but they wouldn't even look at the design: they are absolutely convinced that their current cover is perfect and no one likes Palm's flip cover (guess they don't read the reviews).. I am not looking to make a killing from this design, but would really like to know if there are any plastics manufacturers out there that would consider producing a flip cover for the Visor that effectively makes no changes in the shape or size of the current Visor with cover. If you are that company rep, please email me at: [email protected]

Hmmm... sounds interesting. If it's a good design I think you could probably market it without too much difficulty. As for a plastics mfg... well, I suggest you fire up your favorite search engine .

I know, for one, that I absolutely hate Visor's cover. It's the single worst thing about the unit.

Let's all remember one thing about the Visor's cover - because of the design, it allows Handspring (and I hope third party mfgs) to produce cases that do not use velcro to hold the unit in place. It also allows some (not all) oversized Springboard modules to remain in the Visor while the case is on the front. I am not saying it isn't possible, but I cannot imagin a flip-top design that would allow larger Springboards to remain attached while the cover is open.

Exclamation

ok.. You're forcing me to release this info early. Didn't want to be one of those "oh look what we have in Jan. - no Feb. - no April" kind of guys! ;') I've been telling the people at PDA Buzz and Visor Central to wait to announce until I was ready to ship.

I've already designed and am getting ready to go into full production (last minute tweaks for fit) for a product that works as adapter for the Palm III series covers. It works with the existing modules (that I've seen so far) as well as can stay in place during syncing. We have been going through a thorough testing period and feel confident enough to make some kind of announcement. I hope to be ready to ship this in the next 2 weeks. For more information, please see www.re-visor.com (We're launching this week) or send email to [email protected]

As to Kemp's comments, my design maintains both of the current cover's advantages, and as to Sastian's comments: bring it on - I am just as interested in a solution as I am in making money on my particular design. However, it sounds like Kemp's issues would not be addressed by a Palm III flip cover adaptation.

I wouldn't want to plop a Palm flip cover on my Visor... the Palm one looks kinda ugly. One that kept the Visor "style", though, would be a win.

Am I the only person who actually *likes* the visor's cover? I've got a friend with a palmIII, and I would absolutely HATE cover like his.

Hope testing of the cover doesnt require anything as technical as links do... maybe you could hire some monkeys! :-) Just kidding!

Cool

I just wanted to add that I think it is unfortunate that Handspring would not even look at your design. That doesn't jive well with the impression I had that these new tech companies were keeping in close contact with their customers, such as when Innogear did a survey on this board.

When you get that link working, let me know cause I would like to see the design!

Wink

internic is still setting up to redirect... so we're waiting on them. I had the same experience with Handspring and their love for their cover.. but they have been great in helping us develop our product. Very Unlike Palm. We are also in the process of developing our own "Visor styled" cover to match using the III series pin set. ...as far as your product goes I'd love to trade N.D.A.'s and see if we caould help you develop your product.. our plastics guy is tremendous to work with and about a 30 minute drive from us.. instead of overseas! ;')
looking forward to more of your feedback

Although I do like the Visor cover, I think a good flip cover would be very handy. If it's not very expensive, I would possibly get one as an alternate for when I am using the Visor intermittently.

It would have to come in Ice or Blue, though!

Talking

About time. I'm getting tired of the extra bulk my Visor Slipper adds.

Der S, I agree with you. I seem to be one of the few that actually like the visor's cover. It protects the screen well and gets out of the way when you need it to.

I actually HATE the Palm III cover because it opens up only 120 degrees (or something like that) and is annoying.

I think a flip-cover would be GREAT if it could flip 360 degrees. In other words, if it could fold back onto itself. This would probably be possible only with 2 hinge-lines (simple linkage). And what would be even COOLER is if the cover was nice and clear so that one could, for example, press the schedule button and instantly see what appointments they have without having to flip or remove the cover. This would mean that the hot-buttons are exposed, though.

My design would flip about 170 degrees, less if a springboard module intruded up over the top of the visor and towards the front. It could be clear, though I think exposing the buttons has it's drawbacks (accidental actuation, etc), and I chose not to. By the way, in my design it will be possible to flip the cover open or closed with the same hand that holds on to the back of the visor - al la the Star Trek handheld, though as usual if you plan to work the buttons or write on the screen, two hands are required anyway.

At my level of development, it wouldn't be too smart to reveal the design, sorry.
