CF Module Solutions

While doing my best to try not to resurrect any Holy Wars on this issue, I'm trying to decide between the Memplug and the Flashplus. I've read the threads concerning this in the archive, and am trying to resolve a few more questions. I'm leaning toward the MemPlug (even though I've heard that the Flashplus gives much better service) because I need the backup facility, and I don't think the FlashPlus comes with a backup utility (I've seen references to jackBack in the postings, but it looks like a software package that I'd need to pay more for, and I'd like to get all of the software I need with the price of the module).

My main question is one of battery consumption -- as a VDX owner, I don't have the luxury of a good battery pack, and I've read that the Memplug is quite a bit harder on batteries than the flashplus. Is the battery consumption a substantial problem with the memplug? I'd love to hear any opinions you might have on which is better.

Thanks a lot,

Chris.

The latest release of CardBackup (1.3) from jkWare has full support for the FlashPlus. The app is feature limited shareware which means you can use it free if you only want basic functions (full backup and restore) or register for $8 to add advanced features like timed backup and individual file restore.

I've heard that there may have been issues with certain versions of the MemPlugCF, but in general, battery usage for both adapters is almost entirely dependant on the CF card itself. Some cards have very good power management and some don't. The respective Yahoo Groups forums have lots of info in the archives regarding performance of various CF cards.

Socramon,

may I piggyback on your thread?

I have never used a CF adaptor before and so do not have any idea how it works. i am planning to buy one soon.

can I use the MemPlug CF adaptor and with a 128mb CF for:

1) as a backup of my VPt memory? can I restore from this memory if I ever need it on the road?

2) can I use the CF as my multi-purpose mobile storage device? can I transfer some software (docs, mp3s, jpegs, etc.) from my home PC to my office PC (either through the Visor or a CF reader) while still using it with my VPt?

3) can I run Palm apps from it? read ebooks from it?

4) with all that, can I still use it to store images from a digicam then plug it back into the Visor and view the pics?

MemPlug CF has tested up to 512MB CF. However, please check http://www.pitech.com/hardware/CF/CF_index.htm, since not all CF can use with MemPlug CF.

There is a backup software called "PiBackup" included.

MemPlug CF use standard FAT file system format. Therefore, you shall normaly use the same CF card on other devices

To run application from CF card, you need to use included software called "PiDirect". PiDirect needs PalmOS 3.5 or above. Another alternative solutions are VFS and LauncherIII.

Please visit http://www.LaunchPlug.com/ for more info.

I just saw a product in the store called HandStor. It looks and is labeled to be a module similar to the MemPlug. The manufacturer is DataFab Systems, Inc.

http://www.datafab.com/products/330.htm

Anybody encountered this product before yet?

What about InnoPocket's FlashPlus?

Anybody got a review for either product?
