Talking

Just got my HandyGPS and it is way cool. Wth the module, you can still fit the visor in your pocket, albeit a very large pocket. Got to get some rechargeable batteries.

see ya

Hatman:

I sent in a message asking how I would be informed that they got my check. No response as of yet.

I think in your case,it would have been faster to go to their HQ personally and hand deliver the check and get your unit!

Patiently waiting.

mavidal, a few reasons why i didn't head down to their hq:

1) i'd have to take time off work to go there on a weekday.
2) i'm too lazy.
3) i'd rather spend that time at the beach.
4) i'm too lazy.

cgilbert, i have a few questions for you if you don't mind taking some time to answer them:

1) how well does it work in the car?
2) how accurate is it?
3) when did you send you check in? and how long after that did they send you email? and how long after that did you receive the unit?

can you tell how impatient i've gotten over the last few months????

thanks in advance.

I am going on small trip tomorrow and will use mapping software while driving. When I get back I will write up my thoughts

cgilbert, i have a few questions for you if you don't mind taking some time to answer
them:

1) how well does it work in the car?
it does good, next to windshield,
measures speed very accurately
missed my turn because I was looking
at the display!

2) how accurate is it?
haven't tested in detail, yet, but..
I can see differences around 15 ft,
but I do not know about repeatability

3) when did you send you check in?
I sent my money order on Monday, 10th

and how long after that did they send you email?
got email on july 18th

and how long after that did you receive the unit?
I requested priority, it shipped
on monday, I got it on Thursday

can you tell how impatient i've gotten over the last few months????

me too, my wife thinks I am crazy!

WTF over?!?!? I filled out their pre-order form as soon as it was up, but I haven't gotten ANY information about where/when to send payment or that the modules were shipping! What gives???

Cool

I had a pre-order in from a long time ago, and caved in and used it yesterday to send away for one too. (Joe Free, if you're listening, this just means that I'll be able to give you good feedback when I do get that hardware beta geode unit!)

I still want a Geode, too I think.

I haven't gotten the HandyGPS yet - my one worry is that now when I'm using it I won't be able to fit the visor into my wonderful Rhodiana workthrough case. For those of you using the HandyGPS - do you leave it in all the time? Can you turn it off when it's in the slot? What sort of case are you using?

Thanks

Steve:

I use the color matching leather case for my visor. There is no way that you can have the GPS module in the unit and in the case at the same time. I only plan on using the GPS when I am on the road and especially in cities that I am not familiar with. I am thinking of rigging up one of those suction cup window mounts that have a writing pad on it to hold the unit in place (probably with rubber bands to start with.)

I know there was a company that was going to do a car mount but never heard more about it.

Innogear has what you were describing as a future accessory for the mini-jam mp3 player. Here's a blurb from their faq:

Q: Can I listen to MP3 song in the car?

A: YES! We will be providing accessories for using the Visor/MiniJam in the car, including a quick release cradle, an auxiliary power cord (for getting power from the cigarette lighter)....

Hope this helps!

Cool

CGIlbert,

How 'bout telling us about the maps since they won't allow those of us without a unit to gander at the list. I've looked at the demo ubigo and sample Mountain_View. How many maps are there and are they comparable with the demo?

Does it have an external antenna connector? If not it would seem pretty cumbersome to have to keep it on the dash to see the satellites.

woo hoo! i was starting to get worried about my handygps order, but at last, there is a sign of life from nexian/navicom. my check that i sent 2 weeks ago was cashed yesterday. unfortunately, i have not received any email confirmation from them yet.

optimist: i should get it in a few days.
pessimist: my check was stolen and i'd have better chances of getting my hands on a leprechaun than a handygps!

For car mounting your Visor or Cell Phone, check out this site: http://www.mobileplanet.com/
Go to Handhelds & PDA's
Go to PDA Accessories - Miscellaneous

I bought both a cup holder and windshield mount for my cell phone/gamin gps here.

I have not had much time to view maps in great detail. I am helping to start up a plant, and my free time is zero! I can say that the maps of Mobile, AL appear to be very accurate.

The mapping software still needs some refinement. There are times when I go to view a road, and only half of the road is displayed. This has happened several times.

I haven't told Ubigo yet, because I have not had time.

Oh, my HandyGPS works just fine laying (or is it lying) on my front seat. No need to hold it up to the dash.

Question

Has anyone heard of maps available for places outside the US? I was considering purchasing a GPS unit but to date I have not located any maps for Ireland or the UK.

Alan.

Cgilbert, I finally got my HandyGPS last Friday and so far, I am very disappointed. I'm hoping that I have a defective unit because it's been frustrating to get this thing to work.

1) It locks up on me all the time. I've had to reset it about 30 times so far.
2) Sometimes, when I go to the Satellite screen, it doesn't even show any of the satellites that are in the sky that it's suppose to try to track.
3) Does your unit suck up your visor's batteries like there wasn't a tomorrow?
4) When it actually DOES work, it has trouble in the car even when I place it on the dashboard so that it has a decent view of the sky through the windshield.
5) Sometimes when it looses view of a satellite, the unit locks up and the time display stops working (it freezes up).
6) I've removed all hacks and even did a hard reset so that I had a "virgin" visor, and that didn't seem to solve any of my problems.

Have you had ANY of these experiences at all, Cgilbert?? BTW, thanks for you previous replies to my questions.

PS - This link may interest some of you. It's a very interesting new GPS receiver. http://www.twomobile.com/new_073100_pharos_igps.html
