Red face

Is it all vapour ware? All these buzz reminds me on when MS came out with Windows 95.

99% of customers will not buy 'springboards' anyway. So its just like the IIIx for most people with a lower price as the only attraction. Palm will come out with colors too - wanna bet?

Palm V will stay as the coolest tool with its smallest size. Less functions? Well, a Porsche is not perfect for 5 people too.

In November we know more.......

Thumbs down

Let me guess... You've got a Palm V and you don't want to (can't? - shipping limits) buy a Visor, so you attack it as "vaporware" when there is no factual basis to do so:

Has the actual product been seen, or reviewed?

Is time until shipping being measured in weeks, months, or years?

Has the date been moved forward?

Is there a mysterious lack of details?

We all know what the signs of vaporware are - they're not here

If Handspring was doing this six months ago with no actual product you might have a point, but their not. I think your Visor bashing and heavily Palm V biased post is simply a symptom of "Visor Envy".

Windows 95 -
It came out (as you state) and sold millions upon millions of copies. Your point is?

99% of customers -
Since this is just wild speculation based on NO data, I'm not sure your reason behind saying it. The Visor a much cheaper Palm? Sounds like something Palm fans would go for. And Palm in different colors? Hope this doesn't add to the purchase price.

Palm V -
Few here are saying the Palm will go away. It's the competition we are looking forward to, as it's a major power behind innovation in an existing marketplace. Not everyone wants to pay Porsche prices. Besides, I prefer conversion Vans...

Now just one question: Do you want the best PDA that fits all (or a good pecentage of) your needs for the best price, or will you always just want your Palm V, no matter the cost?

Nope, I don't have a Palm. But if I can get hold of a cheap one (III, IIIx, V, whatever) then I will buy one.

If Visor would be out right now I would buy a Visor.

Don't get me wrong. Palm seem to be a bit complacent, so it's good for them to get a strong kick in the but. What we might get is a better Palm soon, maybe, definitely a cheaper one with more functions.

Lets see........

Lightbulb

Not to slam Palm, but with Hawkins and Dubinsky gone, I doubt that Palm Computing will ever again release a truly revolutionary product like the Palm V or VII. The brain drain from Palm Computing to HandSpring and elsewhere has most likely taken a heavy toll. Instead, Palm will continue to license out it's OS and make incremental improvements to their current line of devices (like a Palm V w/ 8MB, color screens, etc). Alan Kessler doesn't impress me as (nor did Abrams for that matter) as anything more than a salesman and by no means an innovator. In fact, the release of a V8 only goes to prove that point. My bet is that the true innovation will continue to come from the source, Jeff Hawkins. Everyone else, including Palm, will continue to play catch-up.

Question

I see alot of hype about color screens. Well, I actually purchased a Casio E-100 for the color screen.. Its real pretty, but just try and read it outside.. no can do.. Really need to think on this one.. do you really need color? I have since sold the casio and use my Palm III (till the Visor ships ) Readable in just about all type of light, and weather.

Talking

I wish that someone in the press would talk about that issue with color PDAs. I carry my PDA (an old PALM, my Visor Deluxe is on order) with me everywhere, I need to be able to actually read the display.
