Reprograming Digital Link

Does any one know how to reprogram the Sprint PCS Digital Link? Serial number was entered as ESN# during unlock. Now phone doesn't work. When I dial I get a recorded message saying "your phone is not yet activated" Once the phone is unlocked the menu item (activate) disappears and is replaced by (about digital link). Will I need to exchange the phone. No one at Sprint Customer Service seems to know what to do.
