I'm Not Waiting On A Lady (OS 3.51)

As the relatively content owner of a VDX I can tell you that the one feature that I am holding out for isn't flash upgradable memory, or Palm OS 3.51 or even 4.0. It is integrated IEEE 802.11b compliant wireless networking. If Handspring can beat Palm to the wireless punch, without charging an unholy premium for the priveledge I will move off the dime in a heartbeat.

And what about this as a concept....turn the cradle into a wireless antenae with a 1000 foot radius to support home or office wide broadband access out of the box?

I don't think it's gonna happen. I'd love to have 802.11b capabilities(mostly for home use), but I think the $300 Xircom offering bodes ill for the prospects. It's far more likely we'll see built-in RIM-like capabilities.

"...Handspring, are you there...? There's this guy, Keefer... Yeah...that's him...you should hire him to consult for you.."

Can I get a witness! Amen to that!

Built-in wireless is very important to me, and I think would go a LONG way to tapping into the corporate/enterprise market. We just bought some PalmOS devices from Symbol (more rugged for plant use than a Visor, and built-in barcode scanner), and wireless capability was the first thing that everyone on the project asked about.

Wink I'll bet that you're waiting on a friend.

I would be happy with affordable springboard 802.11b. I wouldn't want it integrated if it drove the price up $300.

I will always remember this line from Punk ROck Girl by the Dead Milkmen...

And security guards trailed us to a record shop
We asked for [b]Mojo Nixon[b]
They said he don't work here
We said if you don't got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin

I would expect the pricing dynamics of integrated 801.11b to be entirely different for a product with a rollout of over 100,000 units, as opposed to Xircom which has to price based on quantities of a few thousand.

I paid $250 for my VDX, way back when. I'd go to $350 tomorrow for integrated wireless -- but no higher. In two years this type of connectivity will be a requisite for a mid to high range PDA, not a premium add-on.

As proprietor of the new concept of a duel HotSynch/Wireless transmission cradle I have taken the liberty of annointing myself as a "Pioneer in the field of Radiant Cradle Technology". Now where can I pick up the tickets for my free ticket to Comdex?

Given my dotcom experiences over the past year I will settle for a complimentary ticket to Comdex.
